GTX 570 - help me troubleshoot hard freeze

Thread Starter
Hey OCN, I am running into a straight hard freeze issue when utilizing my GTX 570. Please help me troubleshoot some things.

I did a clean install maybe two weeks ago, and basically the only games I've bothered playing is BF3 beta and I just started Bioshock 2. I had no issues a week ago playing BF3 for an hour or two OC'd GPU. After installing Bioshock 2 a few days ago and playing through that (at stock GPU settings) I started getting hard freezes where the audio would "buzz" and my main monitor connected to my GPU would go blank while my 2nd monitor, which is connected to the onboard HDMI of my mobo, would have this busted greenish and multi-colored lines across the display. I have to press and hold the power button to turn it off. I think reset works too.

So I go through this for a couple days with Bioshock always hard freezing like 20-30min into playing. I finally decide tonight to see if it did it on BF3. Yup, maybe after 20-30 minutes the comp hard freezes the same exact way in BF3, with the buzzing frozen audio and only the 2nd monitor with some busted colors. I do another test using MSI kombuster and after I think it was 25minutes the computer freezes exactly the same way it has been before. However temps were steady at 55C, voltage was at .95 and GPU usage at 99-100% minutes before the crash. 3Dmark11 runs through fine, scored a P5500 or so on stock.

I thought it was the BF3 beta drivers, so I downgraded to 280.26, still freezes. I used these drivers successfully on my previous install. I was afraid it was OC, so I've been stock on the GPU. My CPU is not overclocked, however it is "auto" OC'd on my board even when I have it off to 3.7Ghz. My temps are great, no more than 55C on GPU thanks to the Zalman VF3000F cooler and CPU is never more than 46C on any core. I didn't have this freezing issue before the clean install, but had a weird Win7 SP1 crashing all games issue which is why I ended up doing a clean install.

I'm wondering if it could be my WD 750GB Scorpio Black drive, but I did an HDtune test on it to check for errors and it was all fine, and SMART shows all "ok". Only thing is the drive clicks sometimes, like the drive head resting but that was the case from day 1 when I had this drive installed in my MacBook Pro. I have noticed since yesterday I get a very slight "stutter" on my computer, say I'm about to type an IM messaging and the computer just pauses for half a second and then what I was typing on the screen would show up kind of like lagging in a game. I can feel this short pause every 3-4 minutes, but it's a very short pause as if something was loading.

I'm tempted to just do a clean install again and see if I get these issues =( Just wanted to check in to see if there are other basic troubleshooting things I can do before I resort to spending my night reinstalling windows 7 Ult again.

my sig is current. Specifically I have F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL G. skill ram. Let me know if you need to know anything else. My temps all around are great.

tl;dr notes if you didn't read it all: changed drivers, have main monitor connected to GPU, 2nd monitor to Intel HD3000 via mobo; games/kombuster hard freezes computer after 20-30 minutes, not OC GPU or CPU. Temps are fine, voltage is fine.

Thanks/rep to anyone that offers suggestions, much appreciated.

could it be the Vertex 2? check the back of the SSD where the connectors are and see if there are green or red lights

I had the same problem but just had to bump up the voltage a few steps, rma'd it after i got too sick of it failing all the time, waiting for my third card now....

^hmm so the stock voltage wasn't good enough for you even on the stock clocks? I guess I can definitely try bumping up the voltage to maybe 1.0v on stock clocks and see if it crashes.

*edit* I am running kombustor now at 1.0v and I immediately noticed a whining/whistling noise. It's hard to pinpoint if it's coming from the case to be honest but I know it's associated with running kombustor b/c when I close it, the whine/whistle stops. It's very faint.. but it almost sounds like audio interference whine, but I dunno. I'll let this run for the next half hour and see if anything crashes...

Honestly...I dont think thats worth it.
If its not stable out of the box, then its not your responsibility to get it working.
You have a warranty for a reason. Make use of it. Especially when its going to get in the way of possible overclocking like being forced to bump voltage at stock will.

Oh yeah I definitely understand that. I just want to make sure that the voltage is even the problem. It's strange how I did not have this issue before.. I've gotten it to stable OC's playing BF3 last week at 900/2100 1.050v for an hour of gameplay.

how were the temps?
I mean, thats not too high of a voltage, but it might have burnt out a little from heat or it might just be a sensitive chip that didnt like that admittedly modest voltage.

Max it ever hit was 69C at the 1.050v 900/2100 OC thanks to my aftermarket cooler.

Well going strong now for 32 minutes max 60C, longer than before and longer than my gaming sessions the past few days. I'm afraid Ace_finland may have hit the nail on the head. If so, wow I am bummed. I will go to bed now, and try gaming at the 1.000v tomorrow and see if I get locked up. If not, RMA here I come. I just hope they can duplicate the problem so they don't think I'm bs'ing =(

Yeah, have had 2 cards which was unstable with stock voltage, one had an vid of 0.92v and the other one was at 1.0v, both became stable with bumping it up a bit. But i reasoned that if i pay 360€ for a part i don't wanna fix it myself, still waiting to get back my third card from rma.
