how many game servers can I host from a server?

Thread Starter
I'm looking at building a server and starting some bf2 and cod servers for a buddy and was wondering how many I can fit in an i7 quad core with 32gb ram? I was originally told by someone that one server takes up a core and I'm like hearing different stories here and want to know what is correct.

You'll mainly be limited by ram (but with 32GB that's not much of a concern either rolleyes.gif), after that bandwidth. On a core i7 one server will take maybe 5% CPU. I'd say you should be able to get a dozen-ish depending on how many people are connected at a time.

He already has a lot of people on tf2 like half a mil and they're all mostly full all the time so I'm pretty sure these will be full in no time.

Well then I'd say anywhere in the neighborhood of 8-12 reliably.

It might be worth looking into installing ESXi and running all servers of one game type on each VM. probably will be a little easier to manage and do your port forwarding, etc... You also won't have to open every port on a single machine, just the ones pertaining to that VM's game Server's ports. I would think the main advantage though would be that if a single server crashed, you would only have to reboot the VM and close all the servers of the same game, rather than having to stop all servers for all games

Doing so will cause a little overhead in resource usage because you are running multiple OS's of the same hardware, however you may be able to run a greatervariety of servers that way. For example; Halo-PC could only be run in windows, but Trackmania runs better under Linux...

Just an idea

You'll probably run out of bandwidth (internet) before your CPU's and RAM gets eaten up tongue.gif
