Missing Icons

Last night I took the leap from multiplier overclocking to using the FSB and core voltage too. It was all going well, I'm stable at 3.8 and ill probably try and go.further once I've fixed this.

After ocing and testing I realised my icons in the system tray have disappeared. They are still there, I can hover over them and they show something there, but if I click on them nothing happens :/

Anyone know of any fixes? I recently did a fresh install so I'd rather not go through that again

Go to C:\\Users\\USERNAME\\AppData\\Local and delete IconCache.db and restart and see if that does anything. :l

Although I think this fix is for when Icon's show up as the blank document, but it could ultimately be the current cache is really bugged out...

BTW you need Hidden Files enabled.

I don't know if whether or not this has anything to do with overclocking, but I have a feeling it might have been caused by too many improper shut downs in a row (such as lock-ups or BSODs).

However, let's rebuild the icon cache database and see if it works:
  1. Open Task Manager (you can use Ctrl+Shift+Esc)
  2. Make sure you're in the "Processes" tab
  3. Find Explorer.exe and 'End' it. You can right-click it and choose End Process, or left-click it and then click the End Process button at the bottom of Task Manager. Or, you can just press Delete on your keyboard.
  4. Keep Task Manager open. Click File > "New Task (Run...)"
  5. Type cmd.exe and press Enter
  6. Type the following:
    • CD /d %userprofile%\\AppData\\Local
    • DEL IconCache.db /a
    • EXIT
  7. Back in Task Manager, click File > "New Task (Run...)"
  8. Type explorer.exe and press Enter


I don't know whether or not this will work, but I think it's worth a shot.

Wow, cheers man. Yeah I think its from too many BSODs and random restarts. I'll rep when I'm at my desk then ill let you know if it works when I get back home 18.30 gmt.

You're welcome, although I'm not worried about the Rep - just your icons.

Regarding improper shutdowns of any kind, I strongly recommend doing the following from now on because it can mean that you avoid having worse problems than this:
  1. The improper shutdown occurs (whether it's from a BSOD, lock-up, or some other kind)
  2. So, you go back into Windows.
  3. As soon as Windows is done booting up that first time after an improper shutdown, choose Restart from the Start menu (so, give Windows a proper restart)
  4. Once it's done restarting, continue doing what you were going to do.

So in other words, I recommend avoiding doing anything in Windows after having an improper shutdown until it is given a proper restart. There was one time when I had so many improper shutdowns in a row that I totally lost count. It was probably like a dozen or so, but eventually I was no longer able to get into Windows. Instead, all I got was "Operating system not found". Other times I got some other message about some critical file or files being corrupt so Windows couldn't be loaded. Fortunately for me, I could always get back into Windows using "fixmbr" and "fixboot".

Over time, I discovered that I could completely avoid that problem by just giving Windows a proper restart after each improper shutdown.

Many times a resolution change solves lots of icon issues.

If all else fails, an upgrade install of Windows 7 from *within* Windows will actually perform a repair install just like the days of the XP repair mode!

i turned my computer back on when I got home and everything was fine

Guess all it really needed was a safe reboot thanks for all the advise TwoCables

You're welcome, but I apologize because I was assuming you had tried rebooting already.

So I guess I should say it now: the first step for almost every problem is rebooting. Sometimes rebooting is not an option for one reason or another, so this is a very general rule of thumb.

Still, though: giving Windows a proper reboot after every improper shutdown is probably the best way to avoid problems.

I should have guessed "have you tried turning it off and on again" was going to crop up, but I didn't think it would have worked.
