Question about XFX Geforce 7900 GT/GTO

Thread Starter
Okay, So I bought this video card, and I want to stick it together via SLi.

Here is the problem. I wasn't able to find out much about the 7900 GT/GTO, let alone another one on the market. This one I found has a Zalman cooler on it. Found it at a used computer parts store.
This is the only information I could really find on it on Wikipedia.

"GeForce 7900 GTO

The 7900 GTO is a close cousin of the 7900 GTX.[20] The GTO first arrived at a handful of retailers around October 1, 2006. At the time of launch, GTO boards sold for around US$250, compared to the 7900 GTX boards that cost in excess of $400 at the time. The GTO was essentially identical to the GTX, with the exception that it lacked HDCP and VIVO support, had underclocked memory running at 1320 MHz, and used tighter memory timings. Other than that, the two boards were identical: same PCB, same cooler, same GPU. The GTO used extremely fast 1.1ns Samsung BJ11 GDDR3 memory running at 1.8V, as opposed to the 2.1V it is rated at. Clock speeds on the two cards are identical, at 650 MHz. At stock memory speeds, most comparisons found the GTO to lag behind the GTX by roughly a 5-10% margin. The majority of owners find that their GTO will overclock to 1600 MHz memory speeds, despite the under-volted RAM. Many flash their GTO to a GTX BIOS to officially make it a GTX. GTO owners having trouble reaching GTX speeds with BIOS version 5.71.22.39.13 or newer are advised to simply flash to an older BIOS version such as 5.71.22.39.08, this seems to solve overclocking problems for most users. The GTO was an extremely popular card among enthusiasts as it offered near GTX performance at a considerably lower price. It was a limited production card aimed at cleaning out G70 inventories before the release of the G80, and only spent about a month in retail channels before selling out."

So, I poked around for a while to see if I could find another one, since my motherboard and my power supply and my video card are all SLi ready. Here was the problem, I couldn't even find one on ebay. The closest I came to it was one called the 7900 GS, which is a close relative, the card even semi-looks the same, and if I buy it knowing it will work if I bridge it with the GTO then I'll put the same Zalman cooler the GTO has on it. But here is my question, can I bridge them together?

I'd buy another GTO as long as I know it works and it'd be about a month before i bought it.

No you can't bridge them together. They need to be the exact same card

Seriously though, what year are we in? 7900GT/O SLI would still be pretty sucky.

Perhaps you can bridge them if they have the same BIOS? The wikipedia quote states that the GTO can be flashed. The GS can be flashed to a GTX. If you have the money to blow, try it out and post the results!

Correct me if i'm wrong though, perhaps there is a physical limitation on which card combinations you can SLI.

You cannot SLI 7900 GS/GTO because the cards are not identical. 7900 GS have only 20 PixelPipelines/ 7 Vertex Pipelines while the 7900 GTO have 24 PP/ 8 VP just like the 7900 GTX. 7900 GS have only 430 MHz core while the 7900 GTO have 650. Even a flashed 7900 GS cannot unlock the extra pipelines.
And TBH. you can have a very cheap crossfire/sli setup and much more powerful than the 7900 GTO. I know the 7900 series were absolutely the flagship and it was awesome card in 2006 but the story changed now in 2011. Not to mention the SLI scaling with 7000 series was terrible. And not to forget those cards are pretty power hungry for the performance level they offer.
You can Crossfire 2x HD4770/ 9600 GT SLI and they will be much better than 7900 GTX SLI. or even if you prefer a single card setup GTS 250/ GTX 260 can do it for you.
I am sure you can find those cards pretty cheap in ebay. And you will be absolutely sure they won't kill your power supply.

Good luck finding one. Those things have been out of production for a while now and are terrible by todays standards.
you can check fleabay or craigslist perhaps.

AS I said it would the answers are to buy new cards. I think if you can find one it may be a lot cheaper since it's so out dated but, thats okay I like to use outdated stuff too specially if i can get it cheaper.

Have you tried the wanted section in the market place. I would also check out the old for sale threads every once in a while you might find something ans the owner may still have it even though it's unlikely. I found a nice Asus board for my brother 939 system a year or ago.
