BTW, I already have a video camera that can do both AF and MF. When I want a deep depth of field, I'll use that.

Or you could just stop down the 50. As sub said, the 50/1.8 will be as sharp as anything stopped down, more so than the kit lens anyway.

Sure, check the "Retailers" section in the OP of this thread, which contains all the best-known and reputable online retailers:

http://www.overclock.net/photography...ssentials.html

If you want to buy used (member to member sales), check out photography-on-the.net or fredmiranda.com.

bhphotovideo.com, keh.com and adorama.com are good places for used and refurb lenses.

Thanks.

Should I get this cheap one http://www.adorama.com/CA5018AF.html

Or spend more on this one at 3x the price with the lower 1.4 stop? http://www.adorama.com/CA5014AFU.html

The more expensive one isn't just a stop lower. It also has an ultra sonic focusing motor and focuses much faster than the 50/1.8, which has a conventional micro motor. I've owned both lenses and I can tell you that the 50/1.4 focuses much faster and more accurately (and more quietly for that matter). Also, the 50/1.4 will have slightly better bokeh owing to a higher number of aperture blades.

However, in terms of sharpness, both lenses are more or less equal.

So I really should get the better one then. I am sure the cheap one will do for most things. However if I am doing night shooting with it I would need to do manual focus anyway so it should not matter about the motor correct? If they have the same clarity it is basically what I want to spend.

The added cost for the 1.4 isn't worth it, at least not for most people. The focusing motor and mechanisms are garbage, and at its current cost, you might as well save a bit more for the Sigma 50.
Well that makes sense. I figure if I am not going to use auto focus much why bother, but the Sigma if it is a much better lens than the canon 1.4 then I may as well get that. I was thinking of returning the 55-250 lens I got and using it as credit to the Sigma. Good idea?

If you want to shoot wildlife, why don'tr you get the 60mm Macro, and the Canon 55-250?
