[BBC]Why UK is investing in 'miracle material' graphene

The UK government has pledged £50m towards developing spin-off technologies from the super-strong material graphene.

The announcement comes one year after two Manchester-based scientists were awarded the Nobel-prize for its discovery.

Graphene, the "miracle material" of the 21st Century, is so far the strongest material known to science, and is better at conducting electricity than copper.

I cant watch the video, but the real reason it's being invested in is because british manufacturing is dead. The hope is that this will create more jobs in that sector again if they can find a way to make it cheaper. Personally i think it will be like silicon chips and will get cheaper over time.

I hope it takes off and a cheap efficent way of manufacturing it is discovered. It looks to be a very important material.

£50M really isn't that much....

China invested $32.6B USD in loan agreement for solar just in 2010. If you want to start a cutting edge industry, go big or go home.

I'm sure it would go down well here, spending a few hundred million on this when they're cutting front-line services across the board.

50million pounds? That's chump change. If that were going to US universities for research (UC specifically), 51% would go toward non-research overhead. $1M per year research grants aren't uncommon, leaving about enough to support 50 peoples' research for a year.

It may not sound like a lot, but the public still gets upset when things go awry. Take for instance the US government loan to Solyndra for $537,000,000.

It may not count as 'a lot' because it's not in the billions, but money is still money and people don't like losing money.

Point is that it isn't enough of an investment to get the graphene industry to stick to the UK at all.

Manufacturing foundries and chip processes cost hundreds of millions to set up. If they don't anchor the first bunch of graphene producing plants in the UK like NOW, they will be screwed by Asian manufacturing.

North American and European countries need to be thinking many steps ahead and investing billions to even dream of securing industries like this.
