I dropped screws on my motherboard probably 4 times.
Is it really ok if I don't get all the thermal paste off?
Seriously, start over, you'll be happier in the end for doing it!! Give it a good clean before it dries, polish it up with some rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover.
As far as the screws are concerned, if you have the correct backplate/adapter it may be because of how you are tightening them.
Screw them in initially to hold the heatsink in place, then tighten each one a bit more, next, next, next until you reach the right tightness. Never tighten one screw fully and then move on to the next!
If a screw is still loose check that the heatsink is not contacting with any capacitors.
