The mega-texturing can use a LOT of VRAM, so as certain textures leave the camera's view frustum they're likely moving to lower res versions, and then as they come back into view they're grabbing the higher-res version. My guess is that this is either a bug, or that the person in the video doesn't have a good enough GPU (with enough VRAM) to be running on the settings he's using.
A lot of people are having problems with this game with AMD and Nvidia graphics card on the Steam forums. Some people are having texture pop-in problems with GTX 480's and GTX 580's.

Pre-ordering PC games fail again. These bugs would never happen to console games.

I'm really pissed now. So much so that I'm almost tempted to buy dark souls instead of this

Actually i've been watching a lot of gameplay videos uploaded today on YT and the graphics are just sub-par.. not amazing at all to me. And considering how much I hated previous ID games (Quake 4, ET:QW, etc) I won't be buying this. Also this is apparently 12 or so hours long.. no thanks!

Well that would explain some of the horrible textures I was seeing last night. The good news is that there's plenty of performance headroom and the game scales exceptionally well. A buddy of mine that games on a laptop could not stop commenting on how smoothly the game was running. With an update to improve textures for PC, the game could look fantastic. It already has the atmosphere down, just needs a little visual boost in certain areas.

Sigh...again...
"During the Keynote, Carmack also stressed a number of times that the PC version would possibly get a "super quality texture pack" to fix low-resolution(blurry) textures that Rage suffers at the shipping dataset which is identical to console counterparts."

Tim Willits says RAGE ships with full modding tools.

The game may not be amazing right out of the box, but people sat on their hands for Crysis2 to get DX11 for a while.

Yea this is the problem with not having a beta test, as a development studio you cannot test thousands of configurations, so without a beta test there is a good chance you won't see bugs like these until the game releases.

I find it amusing all the people on this site saying Carmack dropped the ball, or how this is Bethesda's fault. It's amazing how little gamers actually know about game development, and how easily they criticize something that hundreds of dedicated developers have worked on for years. Here's something important to remember: Most games ship with hundreds of known issues, and hundreds of unknown issues, and there is literally NOTHING that can be done to stop that short of delaying a game for years or holding extended beta tests. Well, for PC games this is a problem at least, consoles generally don't have as many known issues, and have far fewer unknown issues due to their OS and hardware consistency, which causes about 95% of all major PC game bugs.

No one had ever said the graphics in RAGE were going to be amazing, decent, but not amazing...but the rest of the game looks to be very good; heh, provided that the graphics are there at all. Also, a 12 hour long game is about all we get these days...infact there have been shorter games. I'd want to know if a person rushed past any content to make that 12 hour deadline as well.

When i see texture pop ins like that it ussually is something other than the game that cause them. Though the console command that appears to fix it for some people kind of makes me wonder about that. The fix is in the game already, but why disable it by default?

I've seen plenty of videos that look great and work fine. I have faith because:

1- No one would ship a game working with pop in like that. Not a single person would accept that. Not a single QA tester wouldn't say "it is broken." If they did ship like that, you can be sure it won't stay like that. They'd never earn a sale again if it did.

2- The wiki indicates that the PC version will get content patches. I think they should deliver it in full working order, but keep your pants on.

I'm still going to get it, still think it looks like a cool game.

Blurry textures is not texture pop up

Blurry textures just look crap. Texture pop up goes from crap to good

If anything having super duper high res textures will only make the problem worse

Mine is like that video except to a much less extent. It is still very noticeable and the textures look like crap in lots of spots. It does need a patch.... that said the game kicks ass besides that :/.
