Cell phones are pretty much a necessity now, at least for me it is. But landlines aren't useless yet. For one, their quality is better, voices are a lot clearer; and also, they don't die whenever the power is out.

True that. Most people here on OCN didn't know how it started and just jump on the anti-Apple bandwagon, I feel like..

Well since Sammy started this war first in 2009 when Apple notified that they violated certain patents. Sammy didn't care/ignored so now they have to pay Microsoft instead, since paying Apple now would just make them look like losers. I have a Korean econ prof and she says image/public perception is VERY VERY IMPORTANT to Korean companies, especially Samsung.
