why would anyone buy a stand alone MP3 player these days anyway? All smartphones have near perfect music player function.

I love my Zune. It's a shame it never caught on. They were priced WAY better than iPods, too.

Zune Hd could play FLAC/lossless audio, it's a shame it got canned because plenty of audiophiles have them.

If only apple gave the ipod better sound quality options...

I bought one because I don't want to kill my phone's battery. I also ride moto so I would much rather crash with an mp3 player rather than a phone.

Well, they keep trying to beat Apple and Sony at their own game and they are wondering why their products are floundering in the market place.

First the Zune, then Win Phone 7.
What about Games for Windows Live or how the Xbox 360 controller on the PC hasn't become the go to controller?

The reason we use Windows OS on a PC is because everything under the sun works on it, we aren't left up to microsoft to say, oh, you can play X on it, but not Y.

A PC doesn't really use proprietary connectors. They are enough of a player in the market place that they can call the start bringing in "open standards" or greatly influencing them.
We have USB, DVI, 3.5mm sound jacks and a power connector that is used on other devices such as home theater systems.

The EU finally declared earlier this year thta Micro USB would be the standard charge/data socket for our phones.
Microsoft had every opportunity to develop something an open dock connector that would rival Apples.
But instead of using their influence to help entice the market with a carrot of R&D, they try to use the stick and force themselves into an entrenched market where people like closed systems. The same people that bend over and say, yes Apple, please, do me again.

I know Microsoft doesn't like open, but they are forgetting why they succeeded in the first place.

I loved my Zune HD and their subscription service and IIRC it has better audio quality than iPod as well, just a shame people go so much for marketing.

Microsoft just killed it off by not making it open.
Had they come along with an open OS and a device like that, they would be where android is now.
Holy cow, I never noticed the "hello from seattle" on the side of mine. Of course, it has a cover on it all the time, but it's still interesting.

Bummer that they're killing the Zune. The HD isn't perfect, but a few performance increases and a UI change or two and it would be pretty close. The Zune Pass is awesome, too.

Who listens to MP3 player when riding a motorbike, you're asking to be killed.
