Minecraft server part list...?

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, I have recently starting playing Minecraft with friends online (there goes all possible free time haha) and I was thinking about making a small form factor server to host and for some basic storage.

I recently found a Antec Aria case (with supply and intel board) being discarded, I was wondering if it would be a good base to start with.

Otherwise I would like a nice small server computer, with a budget ~400 (w/o HDs). Any ideas?

Get a cheap Sandy Bridge CPU, like one of the LGA 1155 Pentiums or an i3. Higher clock speed and IPC is more important than more cores since the Minecraft server is single-threaded. Use some budget 4 GB DDR3 RAM and run it on Linux so you don't have to pay for an OS license. Then find a cheap LGA 1155 board.

Here's a part list for about $150, you might upgrade to an i3 which will put it a bit over $200 instead. You can use the Sandy Bridge GPU and I'm assuming you don't want a monitor, keyboard, or mouse?
If that case you found is in good condition and has a power supply, you should be fine with those. What kind of motherboard is in it?

What is your internet connection like? I hosted myself for a while and we were severely limited by my 768 Kbps upload rate, it only took 2 - 3 players to saturate that and then it started lagging horribly for everybody.

The mobo is an old p4 matx. So it is probably useless. I am going to test the powersupply soon (its rated at 300watts). I have a 10mpbs up speed. I am only looking for ~3-6 players at a time.

RAM RAM RAM! I can't stress that enough. When you start loading up mods.. Minecraft eats up a ton of RAM. 4GB would be decent, 8GB would be best. A typical 8GB kit (~$40-50) goes for about $15-20 more than a 4GB kit

The parts mott555 listed should be sufficient.

Are you sure you want to build a dedicated server? Might be cheaper to rent...

Makes sense, java applications eat memory. I have some ripjaws lying around actually, so it will be fine. Thanks!

@kidshenlong

perhaps, but I've been wanting to have a small form pc for a bit and this is a good enough reason to build one (i have tons of spare parts). I might use it for a NAS or firewall in the future. Perhaps just a test bed for networking in general (and some security tests!)

This is what I use for my server:

Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 overclocked @ 3.5Ghz (Stock voltage and low profile cooler)
4GB Kingston HyperX DDR2 1066Mhz
Asus P5kPL-CM Motherboard
300Watt PSU
Hard drives etc.
Windows Server 2008 R2 (got it free)

That is all and it runs beautifully. with ~20-30 plugins

Video of it handling 42,000 TNT explosions under sand (to add more strain for the physics). Note how I am able to still chat, and the friend I was talking to was having no lag at all.

Wow, that is not bad at all! One the side (and off topic) what plugins do you recommend, I am just trying to make a survival world.

Depends how genuine you want to play it.

If you're feeling hardcore, NO PLUGINS on Vanilla minecraft! No cheating. You die, you go back to your bed (or spawn if your bed is dead)
