In SLI GTX 580 #1 hits 100c while 2nd hits only 75C

Thread Starter
I'm not having any problem with it other than the temp been high. My fan hits around 90% at this temp. What are you guys doing to keep the cards cool.

Edit: here is a better pic on how my rig looks

Are your 2 GPU's right next to each other or are they spaced apart?

too hot... But mines are running at 800MHZ...
I get 86C top and 80C load...
same case...

I added another Tri-Cool fan on the side, and moved the bracket for the fan down one with another Tri-Cool to cool my sandwiched GPU's...

you have good airflow coming into the front of the case yes?

If you have good air flow then you might need to change the TIM on the card. You can always go water?

Since the problem is that the top card draw air straight off the bottom one, sufficient airflow from the front of the case is important.

if you have a fan at the front, make sure the airflow isn't blocked by a harddrive or such.

If this is okay, then maybe you'd want to try a lower voltage on your gpu, and see if it still is stable at 900mhz.. if not, then maybe lowering the gpu clock speed to get a lower voltage...

but first, good airflow is alfa omega when you have SLI

I have the same motherboard in my upcoming build and the space between should be good enough, since there is a pci slot between the pci express

I've got my GTX 580's sandwiched together.

though they run 72c on the top, 61c on the bottom. This is with a custom fan profile, with fans around 70% on top, 60% on bottom, while gaming.

When these temperatures happen, are the 2 cards both under full load from gaming?
Both GPUs at 99% usage?

As there is an empty slot in between the 2 cards, the top card should be, in general, about 10C (15C most) higher than the bottom card. So, your 25C delta is unusual.

Suggestions:-
1) The 2 GTX580s run at the same speed for SLI. But they might not have the same voltage. Use the card with lower voltage at the top position.

2) Add a 120mm fan (blue in pic 1) right in front of the 2 cards to blow more air into the gap for the benefit of the top card.
If necessary, use a self made funnel (see the orange funnel in diagram 2 for the idea) to channel the air in.
Make sure cables are tidy up to not disrupt the airflow.

Good temperature numbers.
I suggest to make a wind shroud (funnel as shown by orange in pic 2 below) with hard construction paper or plastic to channel more air into the gap to further benefit the top card.

This simple move might bring down a few more degrees.

Thanks for the advice on the shroud, going to look into, see how it performs

I'm actually thinking of doing this to my two cards, (probably over the weekend)

removing the bracket
