Black or Clear ?

Thread Starter
I have been waiting for the deck legend ice with black switches to come back in stock, was supposed to be Nov 25th.It is back in stock now and I am about ready to pull the trigger but am now thinking about the clear switches which won't be in stock until Christmas.

I can wait but don't want too. This will be my first mechanical keyboard.Problem is there are no stores in my area to try out either switch.

The keyboard will be mainly for gaming and I have read many times that blacks are best for gaming,I just hate to spend that kind of money without even trying it in person.

Can I get some opinions from people that have either black or clear switches on this particular keyboard. Also any other info relevant to this purchase. Thanks

Blacks are kind of stiff if you like that. I had a board with blacks that i ended up selling a month after i had it because i didnt like the linear switch. I got browns because they a bump when you press them. If i was to choose id get clears.

Hi there.

I have just purchased my first mech keyboard (Filco Majestouch blues) and also wasn't sure which one to get. I wanted one that was going to be good for gaming as well. A lot of people also said that the blacks were going to be the best, but I realised that it's all down to preference. I had previously used the blues and knew I liked them so I went for those in the end. I'm very happy with my decision and would pick blues again in a heart beat!

If you don't have the chance to test any of the switches out, then do it by process of elimination. Can/do you tolerate/want the click and clack of the blues? (I personally love it). Do you prefer the quiet keys like the blacks? Do you want tactile response but don't like the click the go for the browns. So on and so on.

Any questions for me?

I am pretty set on it being a deck keyboard and that leaves only blacks and clears as the choice.

I don't care about the sound only the feel.Like I said this is the first mechanical for me so all I know are cheap rubber domes.

It really sucks that I can't try either of these out in person.

I've not tried Clear switches, so I can't comment on that, but I much prefer the lightness of Browns and Reds for both gaming and typing. Blacks are just too stiff for me and fatigue my fingers, specifically my pinky from using shift, ctrl, and alt keys. The problem is that switch type preference is really different for different people.

This may not me completely related but I have oddly grown a fondness of the apple wired keyboard and using it on my PC. I just love how it sounds and feels like your typing on a laptop but your not. Unfortunately a bunch of the main keys are switched around

Is it a scissor switch board? Sounds like it may be if it feels like a laptop. Logitech has a couple boards with that switch type.

the apple keyboard is a pretty good keyboard for being scissor switches. but that's not what the OP asked.

i haven't tried clear switches, but i have a filco with black switches.. and im not a fan of they mushy feel to them. as a matter of fact, im looking to sell it soon.

Please don't buy a Deck. I have one and while I love it, I really cannot recommend it over a Filco.

The problem with the Deck is it's Flat profile. See here. It's not as comfortable for gaming as people say, and I have small hands. I mean it's not bad at all but it's not as nice or realistic feeling as a Sloped profile.

Second, it's really big. If you're just using it for gaming, you probably don't need the Numpad. You could instead purchase a Filco Tenkeyless, such as this one.

The LEDs lose their appeal because of the faults I mentioned. They're beautiful but other keyboards are better. If you really need LEDs, wait for the Ducky Shine.

As for Blacks vs. Clears, it depends on whether you want a bump or not. Blacks have no bump in the middle and are a bit stiff. For shooters, this is perfect because your hands just flow without anything in the way. But for typing not so much. Clears may be better because there is a big bump with each click. For games like StarCraft, that is a personal choice. You should know Deck is like the only mainstream quality 'board to have Clears until next year at-least.

If you decide to try the Deck out anyway and return it you're looking at about a $30 loss.
