New 'round these parts. Upgrading.

Hey everyone!
Im new here and sort of new to OC'ing anything (at least "for realz")

My system below is running fine everything i throw at it. Radeon prop shows my BF3 FPS doesnt dip below 38; not bad for 2 several year old cards. The problem..is that they are so close together in the case that im routinely hitting 110* on primary and 90* on the lower one. The fans dont fire out, but down. This is heating up my system. I have lowered the clocks in CCC to stop thermal shutdowns (once in a blue moon now). I have decided to go back to a single card for now, so i have a MSI 6950 on the way from newegg. I may try "unlocking" it to a 6970, or at least get the shaders/OC'ing enabled. Read up on that.

My questions:
will performance be about the same as it is with these 2 cards (both 1GB, new card 1GB) or even a bit better (DX11?)

two:
My CPU is at 210mhz x16. It runs fine and never hit over 50 at load with the two tea kettle GPUs in there. Itll be cooler still with one card.
I dont really know how far to "push" or what to push beyond the 200>210 mhz. I can change the mutliple...what are people getting with this chip? could i do 17? I saw someone had a lower multiple but a much higher clock. I guess i need to read some stickies...but could someone point me there maybe?

Also, i have 8gb of g.skill 1333...just plugged in; I know nothing about RAM in terms of making it faster, if it matters, how much, etc.

Bascially...i want my stuff to go faster without melting it. Anyone got a good place to start?

Thanks!

The 6950 should give better performance than those two cards with less heat and power consumption. Keep in mind though that you might not necessarily be able to flash/OC it to 6970 speeds.

As for the CPU, it depends on the chip you have. Some people will get higher speeds. Others will get lower speeds. Depends all on the chip.

RAM all you really want to do is maybe tighten the timings but that's not really necessary. You can leave it as is and it's fine.

Also, getting an SSD for OS and Programs might help with load times.

THanks man.
I know the 6950 is a gamble now with the "laser cut" and all, if i cant do anything than it sounds like its still better in stock form.

As for the CPU...is it safe to just try it? I have the turbo V app that lets me mess with speed and multiples...also have AMD overdrive. Is it better to do it in the BIOS? are there any known "safe" starter points for the 955 or is every single chip unique?

These are great, the spreadsheets are a nice starting point.

Any idea why i cant go past the default 16x with AMD overdrive, but i can in my BIOS and using the Asus turboV program?

Because with AMD Overdrive your are loaded into OS so it limits what you can do to prevent instability. You can only OC what they know is stable. When you change it in the BIOS, it's not necessarily stable. That's why it can crash loading the OS. I hope that makes sense.

always do your own OC and tests, lol thats why sofware is made in the first place. for extream beginners ^_~

The 6950 will probably be quite a bit better than the 4870s. I'm not sure how they match up against 5830s, but I was just running 2 5830s lightly OCd as well as my reference unlocked OCd 6950 in BF3, and the 6950 beats it hands down. Completely stable FPS, no micro lags, everything maxed out and also no mouse pointer lag.

When I OC'd my 455 (yeah I know it sucks) I just pushed it up 200 Mhz, and went in 25's from there. If you're thinking of going any higher amount, you should do rigorous testing, like 8-12 hours prime95, etc.

For the GPU you'll probably see much earlier when it becomes unstable, I just push it till it crashes then pull back by 15-25 Mhz and it should be stable. This has applied to all GPUs I have had to date.

Thanks guys, super helpful forum here.

I found a new version of overdrive, installed that and played for a few hours last night.

200mhz X17 with 1 increment voltage bump - Passed 3d mark vantage (CPU hit 66*...primary GPU hit 117*)
210 X16.5 - Nope
210 x17 - Nope
212 X16 - Good (where i was at)

I think those GPUs are giving the whole system heat headaches. the 6950 is due on friday. I cant beleive how hot stuff got after only 10 minutes of benchmarking. I ran Vantage before i went crossfire and never saw anywhere near these temps. I THOUGHT i had good cooling with the smilidon and an upgraded rear 120mm.

I wont be doing any more playing until the 4870's are out and the new one is in...and tested for temp issues first.

Both enlightening and entertaining this OC'ing thing...just hope i didnt burn anything up last night.

I did notice that my C2 stepped 955 runs all 4 banks of ram at rated speeds (found somewhere that it might not, but the C3 would). Also found that my MB can take the x6 lineup no problem...so if i DID burn something
