[NW] Apple calls out Microsoft for slow adoption of Windows 7, slants the facts - Page 12

I was doing some research on the whole "macs are now as cheap as PC's" arguement and as I was doing that I stumbled onto www.mac-forums.com where one commenter, justifying the premium on Apple goods, wrote:

No, because that would totally derail this thread and probably start five different arguments. I might make another thread about that later, or maybe not.

Go check for yourself though, shouldn't take more than ten minutes.

Oh yeah, not to mention Apple has sold WAAAY less copies of Lion than MS has of Windows 7.
Not only that but Win 7 was a new OS entirely. Since then, Apple has had what...2 "upgrades" to their OSX line and charged people for that. The equivalent would be if MS started charging people for service packs. At least when we buy a new OS...it's a bloody new OS and not just a few updates here and there.

Also, what a lot of people forget, when Win 7 was about to be released, anyone who bought a computer within 6 months of it's release date got a free upgrade to Windows 7. Microsoft was also selling Windows 7 for cheap. I don't recall the price off the top of my head though. The free upgrade though isn't just unique to Windows 7. When I bought one of my laptops, I got a free upgrade to Vista when it launched. So in buying my one laptop, I got 2 copies of Windows. Let's see Apple do that...knowing them, you can buy the premium for the Macbook and then pay $30 to get the Update to LION and then they'll probably charge you a $50 convenience fee for being Apple.

Um, Lion is $30? Wow, and I can do a clean install from that disk can I? On any Wintel hardware I like?
Oh.. no... wait, I can't, it'd break the EULA to install it on my rig. Guess I won't be using OSX any time soon then.

Or this amazing $30 wonder simply a service pack with the odd extra thrown in? Like SP1 for win7?

I mean, seriously Apple, get with the 21st century. Charging for service packs was fine when you had to mail out a disk, but now we have this thing called the "Internet", which lets you, you know, download stuff?

Anyone who argues this is an idiot (when talking desktops).

1. It only applies to the laptops. The apple desktops are overpriced garbage no matter how you look at it - unless you consider this magical "aluminum case" to be worth THOUSANDS by itself. Not to mention how incredibly overpriced their hardware is.

2. The laptops may be thin, but the specs are garbage. Where are the 8-core CPUs? Where is the decent GPU? They dont have them. Sure, the aluminum case is nice, but you suffer in the area of actual specs. Sure, my Sager only has a 1 hour battery life (its got a TPD of 180w...), but my i7 740QM, GTX 460M and 8GB DDR3 1333mhz will eat ANY Apple laptop - and it only cost me $1400 (last year).

Well duh a $30 Service Pack download (in terms of size and download time) or a $100+ OS that most people don't actually buy, just buy computers with it.

It is not a service pack. Pretty much every app and feature that exists in Mac has been improved significantly. There's significant security improvements, and then you've got the other additions like Launchpad, system-wide gestures, Mission Control, and whatever else. Service packs fix bugs and security problems, that's about it.

Yes, but the way they go about it makes it legal. They never said "more people bought lion on launch than Win 7", they said it had a faster adoption rate - i.e. their group of customers switched faster - which is technically true.

They're basically taking the statement that "X% of our customers upgraded to Lion, while only 0.5X% of MS customers went to Win 7" (not actual numbers... duh). Then they go "see, faster adoption rates".

The problem is they speak in rates - not numbers. What I WANT MS to do is just counter them with numbers: "In the 1st year of Windows 7, more people used it than all other competing OS's combined".

The only people that would care about these warped statistics are Apple fans already anyways.
