First headphones

Thread Starter
Hi all , these will be my first headphones ! I am not sure yet if it will be better moving to headphones and replace my 5.1 creative speakers but i want them because there will be less noise in my house and i will be more comfortable wearing them and beeing the only person who hears the sound ! And i can use them with my laptop while gaming or listening to music!
Specific now i am going to use them with my desktop to play Cs , BF3 , Dota , WoW and other fps games ! I want them for outdoor use too but not often .
I want them too for good music so i want them to have a good bass .
I don't know a lot about headphones so that's why i am posting here .
Is soundcard with headphones good to have ? I use onboard right now .
I want them to look good and prefer white color but black is fine too .
What about Monster Beats by Dr. Dre Solo white ?
I want someone who knows a lot about audio to answer me specific .
My budget is 100 euros or more if it's neccesary ! Dr. Dre Solo costs 178 so worth the extra money ?
An amazon link will be very helpful .
Thanks all

Anything by Beats by Dre is overpriced garbage. For you, I would probably go with a set of headphones that don't need an amp to sound great since you'll be using them on a variety of platforms and for going out (you could get a portable amp/DAC for your laptop, but you can always do that later down the line). Since you were looking at the Beats Solos, I'm guessing you're ok with on-ear headphones. Are you ok with over-ear headphones? Those are usually what are recommended around here. Or do you want in-ear monitors (earbuds)?

Headphones are great for pr0n.

Just know that most higher end headphones have higher input impedance than cheaper headphones, and will require a good soundcard (for impedance matching) if you want to get decent volume out of them.

I would actually suggest getting an external amp so he can use it with his laptop and not just with his desktop.

I really enjoy my Sennheiser HD555's, but they aren't a bass heavy headphone. Comfortable? Yes. Provide great spatial awareness while in FPS games? Yes. Sound great for my music tastes? Yes. They also don't require an external amp to run at their full potential.

Well, what exactly are you looking for? Over-ear headphones? In-ear monitors? IEM's would probably be better for going out, which you said you would be using them for, but not often.

As someone who's typing this right now while using SE210's...remember that the exceptional sound IEM's can deliver is directly correlated to proper usage; you'd be surprised how many people don't insert them correctly (and then complain that the sound quality isn't there...).

Haha, I think you misunderstood me . IEM's are short for in-ear monitors. They are a type of headphone, not a specific headphone model. They're earbuds, like the kind you go jogging with. I was just asking if you prefer those or over-ear headphones and it seems like you want over-ear headphones, so now I can start giving you suggestions.

As far as white headphones go, they're pretty hard to find, especially for the models worth getting. Black is a much easier color to work with. A nice set of reference headphones would be the AKG K240 MKII's. They sound fine unamped, but of course will benefit from an amp, so that's something you can buy later if you feel the need to. These are studio monitor headphones, so you won't get head-thumping bass, but then again overwhelming bass isn't a good thing when you're trying to hear enemies sneaking up on you in CS or other FPS games you'll be playing.

Also, not sure how well these will work if you go out with them. The cable is pretty long and would probably be a nuisance.

Not quite sure what the conversion rate from pounds to Euros is at the moment, but it should be pretty close.

EDIT: Comes out to about 113.72 Euros. I think the extra 14 or so Euros over your budget are worth it, though.
