[bf3blog] Report: EA and Valve in late-stage talks to get Battlefield 3 to Steam. - Page 19

I agree with that. If this game doesn't come to Steam I'll get it on Origin. As of right now I'm gonna hold off on reserving just to see if it is on steam and how it'll be implemented.

Hypothetical scenario A (worst case):
Bf3 is on Steam, launch BF3, launch Origin, end up @ battlelog
Hypothetical scenario B ( best case):
BF3 is on Steam, launch BF3, end up @ battlelog
I can understand not wanting to have to run another program just to play BF3 but the way things are going every major publisher is going to end up doing something like this. I'm not saying " go buy BF3 use Origin it rocks" I just don't understand why this is such a big dealbreaker for people.
Most people such as myself would like to keep our game collection in one place not bother with having multiple apps to run our games. I personally found about steam a while back and I think it is great mostly because of their deals and auto patch and game saves and other stuff. I have not seen one single decent deal on Origin during the past 2-3 months after I installed it. Also Valve seem to be a better company than EA>

Right, I'm kind of OCD so I like to keep things together like that too. I doubt I would ever use Origin for anything other than playing BF3 anyway. I try to buy physical copies of games when I can unless they are having a great deal on Steam. I got a promo thing for Steam years ago with free copies of HL, HL2 CS:S and a few others and I've used it ever since. I was basically trying to make a point of it not being as big of a deal as its being made out to be.

i dont mean to jump on you, but when are people going to have this sink in.

BATTLEFIELD 3 WILL REQUIRE ORIGIN TO RUN

how many times does this need to be clarified, even after all the confirmations of it being a hard, set in stone fact.

regardless of the platform its being distributed on. very much like Games for Windows Live (which is why i cant understand the Origin hate really).

if you buy a GFWL game that works on Steam, Bioshock 2 or GTA4 for example, you still require GFWL to be installed and running in order to play the game. it automatically launches with said titles. and even required CD-Key activation through GFWL in order to use the game properly, IE go online if possible. seems like pretty much the same thing here, except replace GFWL with Origin service.

im personally hoping for a steam release so i can cancel my hard copy but thats just because like most, i prefer all my games in one location if possible. although if Origin is implemented as smooth as GFWL is in its titles, technically it would be even more convenient to run BF3 outside of Steam as all you need is a single .exe shortcut for the game, and hopefully Origin is queued to launch alongside it. as opposed to launching Steam, then launching BF3 and launching Origin.

although isnt it confirmed that its a 25Gb download? coz i might keep the disc copy then haha.

i love steam and its hands down my platform of choice, but its not exactly the most convenient service for running games. for starters the steam platform must be running in order to launch any of the games. plus it can be a real pain in the arse if you plan to play offline or lose your net connection and try launching steam if you havnt gone offline in a while, as steam needs to update some user register thing in the offline mode, and if you havnt done it for a while, steam wont run offline. we've all been there.

im sorry i havnt used origin to run a game, is it the same? or can we launch a game from a desktop shortcut and it will boot straight up and load origin in similar to GFWL? or better yet do you even know that origin is even there? or is it just a background service?

It was a "hard , set in stone fact" when there was no deal with Steam. If there is a deal with steam that could very well change. What do you not understand about that? Or do you live in a world where things don't change?

and since we currently dont have any Origin required games on Steam we won't know for sure what the case is. Using GFWL as a barometer is fine, acting like it makes something a fact isn't.

the deals come in by EA newsletters in your email if you subscribe to it.

I'm wary of origins because it is new and hasn't had time to flesh out the problems and growing pains like Steam has done. In a few years when everything is sorted out it might be great but I don't want to be tied to it right now. Also, I'm a bit concerned with a few things I've been reading about ToS problems. Stuff like not owning your games after 1 year and EA giving themselves the ability to keep track of computer activity outside of origin/games.

Those are older examples that stuck in my mind and I'm not sure if they have been changed since then. More than anything, Steam just works and I'm not going crazy for BF3 atm. If its convenient, sure I'll buy it on steam, but otherwise I won't get it because It's not very high on my wishlist.
