why are all the higher end nvidia cards (570's, 580's) all 1-1.5gb while the higher end radeons are all 2gb?

what does memory in vid cards do and is it important in furture-proofing?
back in the day..

someone was saying nividia is better for specific games like bf3 due to programming etc? any truth to that?

my budget is $350 cdn ( www.newegg.ca ) but id rather stay under 300 if possible.

so far it's looking like:

evga GTX 570 $350 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814130684

evga GTX 560ti $260 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814130657

msi 6950 TFII $280 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814127588

sapphire 6950 $270 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814102945

is a 6970 2gb a major upgrade to a 6950 2gb? such as this ( http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814121430 )
