.. a rad have to be to use passive cooling; ie no fans? This would be for just one block on the cpu?

Why not get a big rad and fit low rpm fans?

Say a Hardware Labs SR-1 360 or XSPC RS360 and get some really low dBA/RPM fans. I'd gather that if you're doing the CPU you'll need like a pretty big rad to get good temps when passive, in which case you're better off looking for a huge passive air cooler.

List of fans:
-Noiseblocker NB-Multiframe M12-S1 120mmx25mm Ultra Silent Fan - 750 RPM - below 6 dBA (22.95$)
-Noctua NF-S12B ULN 120 x 25mm Fan (Ultra Low Noise - 500/700 RPM) (24.95$)
-Scythe S-FLEX™ SFF21D 120mm Fan w/ S-FDB Bearing (15.99$)
-Coolink SWiF2-1200 120 x 25mm Hydro-Dynamic Bearing Fan - (800RPM 8.5dBA/60.4ml/h) (14.95$)

Between 0 and 10 dBA you'll not even hear them, less so if your PSU has a fan.

As far as I know passive cooling doesn't really work without some kinda airflow. Like venting the attic of a house. I would imagine it would have to be huge with there being little to no airflow in a house. Unless your house is very cold.

I'm ordering one of these bad boys at the weekend to try and cool an i7 and a 580 passively. I'll let you know!

It might work. Are the tubes copper?

Yeah they are copper but its painted black or something. When I removed one of the clips that was holding it on, it was copper underneath where it wasnt sprayed.
