Locked 6950 2gb

Thread Starter
Hi everyone.

I'm new to posting here, but I've been lurking for a couple of months now, which has greatly influenced my decision to purchase a Sapphire 6950 2gb Toxic (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102951).

One of the decision points was the potential to unlock the 6950, combined with its factory OC, into a full 6970.

However, after "flipping the switch" as well as manually flashing the bios (using a modified 6950 bios), I was still unable to unlock any extra shader cores.

Given the price premium I paid for this particular 6950 2gb ($289.99 compared to prices in the $269.99 to $299.99 range for other brands), my question is whether I should return the 6950 2gb and get something else instead or is this 6950 2gb with its factory OC still a good deal for its price despite not being able to unlock?

My reasons for returning the 6950 2gb Toxic are:

1) Did not unlock into a 6970 2gb. Even though the performance gain would only reportedly be around 5%, I'm sure that I wouldn't be the only one in this particular forum who would be bothered by that.

2) No lifetime warranty. XFX brand cards, though as stated in reviews have heat issues, come with lifetime warranties, which would help alleviate concerns over the heat issues while also providing a potential upgrade "out" later on.

My reasons for wanting to keep the 6950 2gb Toxic are:

1) Who wants to deal with returns through the mail?

2) Came with free Deus Ex: HR and Dirt 3.

3) Runs BF3 beta pretty well, after tweaking the fan settings through Trixx.

If I return the 6950 2gb Toxic, its replacement would range from a 560 Ti to a real 6970 2gb.

So, with the above in mind, is the 6950 2gb Toxic that I have still a keeper even though it's not unlockable?

The only reason you should return the non refrence 6950 is no waterblock available for it, if you plan on waterclooling or for whatever reason you really wanted/needed a true 6970. Couldn't think of something else.

You're not looking at a huge performance increase anyway. I'd vote to keep it. It's a fantastic card.

Is the jump in price from the 6950 toxic ($289.99) to the 6970 2gb ($329.99 to $399.99) worth it, considering in particular the 6950 toxic is factory overclocked to 6970 speeds, even without the shader core unlock?

Just use Trixx and set it to this and forget it:

Core 880
Memory 1375
Voltage 1150

There you go, pretty much on par 6970 performance (not enough of a difference to care).

Well, I'm upgrading from a 9600 GT and I don't upgrade (a more accurate term would be "build a new system") very often, so I want something that will keep me reasonably current for a good amount of time without destroying my wallet.

Keep it, overclock as far as comfortably capable, and enjoy. You've still got one of the best 6950's, and have as far as I can tell, no real reason to change at all.

Do I need to do anything in particular in terms of fan settings?

I also read something about voltage in CCC needing to be set at +20%. Would that affect anything?

Edit: Just checked Trixx, and it looks like my current settings are at:

Core: 880
Memory Clock: 1300
GPU Voltage: 1175

I'm pretty sure that I can just bump the Memory Clock up to 1375 without having to change anything else or worrying about heat/voltage.

Should I try to lower the voltage to 1150 still?

I bet that card has a lot more OC headroom. It is a pretty stout card, so I would leave the voltage and see how far you can take it with stability. The core likely has a lot more it can do.

That's just IT the TOXIC IS Factory OC'd to basically be a 6970 out of the box, with the exception of the Shader UN-Lock ... it's a bummer that YOURS didn't un-lock, you're one of the 30-33% unlucky ones. The Shader Un-Lock with about a 5-9% improvement in performance would have made it a TRUE 6970 but you can Over Clock the TOXIC past the Factory OC still and get almost that same 5-9% improvement in performance ... you just won't be one of US fortunate guys that get BOTH
