SLI 570 Choppy 3D

Thread Starter
Hi community. I have 2x EVGA GTX 570 SuperClocked cards running in SLI. I've noticed that games and benchmark utilities (most notably Heaven DX11) appear choppy at times. What I mean is: with camera movement, it's almost as though horizontal lines appear on the screen. It looks kind of like a refresh rate problem with the monitor. I wouldn't describe it as stuttering in the classic sense of the word.

I've tested my setup using:
Crysis 2 DX11 High res texture pack on Ultra
Portal 2 max
StarCraft 2 max
RAGE max
Heaven with max settings

I've noticed the choppy effect most prominently in Crysis 2, Heaven and RAGE.

Crysis 2 and Heaven appeared choppy when I was running just 1 GTX 570, so I don't think this is stuttering due to SLI.

Does anyone else experience this? Any advice or feedback? Please tell me there's a simple fix. Please help.

It is just screen tear. You need to enable vsync in your games and it will stop, assuming you are over 60fps, if you are under then it won't help. Can you use fraps to see your fps in games.

Yup, definitely screen tear. Vsync will fix it!

I forced vsync in the nvidia control panel, but the choppy flickering continues in RAGE. I'm hitting 60 FPS consistently in RAGE - I think the game caps at 60 for some reason.

When I check in the nvidia control panel, my refresh rate is set to 59Hz, but when I check in my monitor's menu, it says 60Hz. I can't seem to force the control panel to 60Hz, possibly because I'm using DVI to connect my monitor. Any thoughts? Could this be causing the tearing?

Possibly I am not sure. Do you have a DVI to HDMI cable? (which would require HDMI plug in on the monitor)

I had the same problem, I think what happened is that Nvidia Control panel already has a predefined setting for rage.exe and rage64.exe. Sli is configured to Alternate Frame 2 which we do not want. You cannot change it either, really annoying!

What I did was rename the executable to rag.exe and run it. Nvidia control panel will not recognize this in its predefined settings and will let you use SLI mode normally. Game is smooth as butter.

Wow, what a weird work-around. I'm at work now and won't get a chance to try this until later tonight, but I want to clarify a couple things before I do:

1) Do you have everything set to default in the nvidia control panel?
2) How do I want SLI configured?
3) Do I want to assign settings in nvidia control panel to the newly renamed rag.exe or just run with default, global settings?

When you create a new application profile for rag.exe it should default to your global settings (Global settings should have SLI on by default).

Try running it with default global settings and see if it runs better after renaming the exe.
