Would there be a benefit?

Thread Starter
I am running two WD greenpower 500GB's in RAID 0. Would there be a benefit from switching to two 1TB WD Caviar blacks? I mean aside from the additional storage capacity. I have one caviar black now, it was replaced by the RAID setup. Newegg has the black on sale for $69 shipped but, is there going to be a noticeable difference?

Here are the RAID benchmarks:

Not if you are just using them for storage. The seek time is going to be the limiting factor in a RAID array.

Thank you for your reply. I use the RAID to limit the amount of programs and data I have installed/stored on my SSD.

I thought WD greens should not be put in raid0 since the RPM slow down on the drive can cause the 2 drives to get out of sync. At least that was the issue a year or 2 ago...

Also the read speed would be alot larger, closer to 185 MB/s, and the seek time should drop 3-4ms.

I had 2xF3 500GB in raid0 and got 205 MB/s with a 8.9ms seek time.

I used to have four WD Caviar Green 1TB's in RAID 10 without any issues whatsoever 2-3 years ago for a year straight in a server.

You'll have issues with WD Caviar Black 1TB's in RAID 0, or at least not get the performance you're expecting. Google it, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Imo, get two Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB's ($45 each) in RAID 0, it's cheaper, faster, quieter, and reliable. I've had 34+ drives and none have yet to go bad on me.

Just ask me for benchmarks, I can provide you some.

I thought the greens had a problem, but exactly F3's is the way.

Thanks for the advice, I just ordered 2 of the F3's.
