Sideclocking?

I don't know where this goes but most of the overclocking questions seem to go here so if it's in the wrong spot can a mod please move it. I know increasing the bus speed is a way to overclock with an unlocked multiplier. I also heard it yields better performance/produces less heat than overclocking via the multiplier. Does this mean if I were to lower my Multiplier and RAM clocks, and increase the bus speed to give the same final speed, I would see an increase in performance?

It's possible, you'd have to have a few benchmarks to hand to be certain which way works best for you and your hardware.

yeah it really depends u can get better performance but not much because all the clocks that depend on the base clocked are increased but its usually just a small bump not like 100 extra base clock.

Id recommend just sticking to multiplier its just easier less math to do with the ram also.

I'm still on a stock cooler so was more interested in the supposed lower heat than anything because on load I get uncomfortably close to the 62C point.

I would say that is false, considering you still have to increase voltages, which in return increases temperatures.

Maybe I was a little unclear. I'm talking Stock Voltages, going for Stock Clock speed. eg. 16x200 vs 10x320

No, you won't get anything out of increasing the HT Reference clock instead of the multiplier. There is literally no difference.

But on the other hand, each chip has a combination it likes. 240x15, or something similar for example. Try to find the multiplier Reference clock combo that gets you least voltage.

You should undervolt. Stock voltage is way too high, it's usually 0.1v or 0.15v too much, which can cause a massive difference in temperature.

You'll want a combo of both like 250x16

High FSB:
Usually more stable
Wider bandwidth = better performance that can only be measured in synthetics.

High Multi:
Doesn't effect rest of system
Lower FSB = possible "lower" volts 0.00Xv, not enough to effect temps.

Hmm, by dropping the voltage down to 1.25 or so, I can now OC to 3.4 and my temperatures are only reaching 55 on load, much lower than the 61.5 from stock speed and volts.

It depends on what app you look at, but present-day AMD systems don't yeild much gain from FSB overclocking. In the old days, games ran faster with a better FSB speed. For games at least, it's been shown many times that faster than DDR3 1600 can actually hurt framerates, and the stock bus feeds it plenty of data so there seems to be no FSB bottleneck to overcome, like there was in the "old days".

So at least for a typical Phenom II overclock, multiplier OC is all you need. I OC the baseclock just to get Cool-n-Quiet working at it's max 17.5X CPU multiple.
