If my copy of the game ever comes, is a tank type character viable/needed/suitable for a newb?

Everything.

Up until 1.19a, the following notable changes have happened:

-No more exp/sp fatigue, grind for hours if you will.
-Recipies simplified a few times over, repair mats are now a generic item with 5 lvls of quality to repair the various levels of gear(lvl 50 stuff tends to take lvl 4 and lvl 5 quality repair stone thingy)
-Market wards faster, have their own item search in which you can put a highlight mark over any retainer selling what you're searching for. They also load into memory first, so you don't ahve to stand still and hope they pop up for ya.
-UI changes, more keys unbound to change keybinds.
-Macro changes, more syntax for more flexible targeting situations
-Class/stat adjustments along with the major battle overhaul
-Major battle overhaul. No more fatigue. Everything is on a cooldown timer now, and auto-attack has been implimented.
-Stats, and subsequently gear that boost stats have all been altered so stats now have a more direct and profound impact in combat.
-SP no longer exists, nor do classes. Just jobs and 'exp' exist now. Character level was also abolished.(consider it like ffxi job setup now)

-Battle regimines have been removed until battle system tweaks can be made.
-The anima system has been introduced. To make it drastically short, you condense a weapon or armor piece you've used for awhile, and turn it into a tiny crystal that you can then implant within another weapon or armor piece to imbue said new piece with stats from the previous one.

-Lots of mini-quests are now all over the place to add life to the npc's and towns.
-More storyline quests have, naturally, been added. including the ifrit primal battle mentioned in the OP.
-Chocobos and airships

-And I'm sure that's about 1/2 of what has been in the update notes over the past 3-5 updates. If you wanna know more, visit the lodestone as they just outlined ffxiv's future till mid 2012. That future includes an entirely new server backend/world integration(no more seperate servers, just one giant seemless realm), and a brand new graphics engine with new artwork on the world maps to finally erase the cut and paste landscapes and to make it easier to optimize on the ps3 version.

Gladiator can be quite rough at times which is the main archetype for a standard "tank". Although that is the beauty of this games jobs system, there are two other pseudo tank classes that have defensive abilities, Marauder and Pugilist, both have defensive abilities that let them tank well, mix and matching between the three is very effective. Although gladiator just alone without borrowing any of the abilities from other jobs can be quite weak.

I've had 5 server error disconnects this evening. No problems at all till this evening. Sucks, every time I start a leve or quest I get a dc. I'm loving the game though. Its improved sooooo much.

Pay to play was always the intention from the start so it's no surprise that since they got some of us hooked they want to start collecting again. And in honesty why not? I quit wow and rift cause I didn't want to Pay for a game I wasn't enjoying but if I stay hooked on 14 this time around there is no reason not to Pay.

I will say though I'm really looking forward to TOR so by January I may not be paying for 14 any more. But once 2.0 is up and running I'll be more then happy to try it out again even if I have to pay.

I was really impressed with how far its come. I would have np paying a monthly sub as long as it keeps getting better.
