not to be a fanboy, but in terms of raw performance nvidias charts are correct. they also say this:
Quote:
"When you start adding more complex shaders, then the power can be seen in the details. You get better lighting slightly and maybe smoother pixels, but for an average Joe – not for hardcore gamers – that image will not improve a lot."
which still means improvement.

if i may give an example ... my car cost me 4000e when i bought it 5 years ago ... it goes up to 140kph and it gets from 0 to 100 in 20ish seconds ... if i paid 40000e for my car it wouldnt go 1400kph and it wouldnt get from 0 to 100 in 2s.

meaning that gtx580 is much pricier than the average gpu and its price per performance is not the best ... however it is still the only card that can do what it does

p.s. feel free to replace the gtx580 with 6970

what they say is kind of true though. Just adding a similar percentage of polygons as before isn't going to cut it. It just isn't as noticeable now than it was before. Same goes for new kinds of lighting etc.

But yeah I find it quite stupid to talk about power-to-beauty ratios and visuals like that. It's mostly subjective.

"Performance power and visual fidelity are not things that should be compared," CEO Cevat Yerli told NowGamer in an interview. Referring to a recent report by Nvidia, which states that its top graphics card is nine times the power of current consoles, he added. "Nine times more brute force power might not result in nine times more visual quality. It may, in fact, only result in 50 per cent more visual quality. Any benefit we get from increased hardware power today, is applied more and more to the finer details."
You got your thread title wrong.
50% more is not double, that would be 100%

Nothing special really.
I think EVERY gamer knows that 9 times more processing power does not mean 9 times "better graphics"... its common sense and has nothing to do with understanding

I'd like to see that nVidia chart though, does anyone have a link?
If it merely states that a GTX 580 is 9 times more powerful than a console, then they're essentially correct and not lying at all since it doesnt necessarily say it looks 9 times better.

Two different things.

At the end of the day, the simple fact that a single GTX580 can run the same game that a 360 or PS3 is running, with 32x CSAA @ 1200P @ DX11 (Not 720P upscaled to 1080P) with all the other post-processing effects turned to the max and more than double the frame rate of the consoles which run at said 720P resolution, lack AA of any form, run in DX9 or equivalent API and have a large majority of the post processing effects either disabled or on the lowest settings. I have to say that the PC does look 10x better. Its all in the finer details however. Such as tesselation, much improved lighting, higher frame rates, higher resolution, less jagged edges. The PC DOES look 10x better as far as I am concerned.

I played Gears 3 on my 360 and heaps of people were talking about how awesome the graphics were. I told my mates to come over and watch me play Metro 2033 or The Witcher 2 and then see what awesome graphics really are. GoW 3 looks dated and pretty crappy to me now. Which is due to the fact that my PC is 10x more powerful (well now that I have SLI more like 15-18x more powerful) than the X360.

So it is all relative. That 10x better is not in raw polygon count. Its in all the little details and they are what matter most to me. Lighting in particular makes up a large portion of the visual quality. Its often said in my game design course at Uni that 70% is lighting, only 30% is the actual polygon count. Meaning, lighting is pretty much everything. And my PC poops all over any of the consoles as far as lighting quality is concerned

Just another company that got to where it is due pc gaming, who moved to console and will fervently defend it as that's where their profit is.

Anyone remember the Crysis2 pc demo? "Press start to begin"
It is sort of intuitive that the relation between processing power in FLOPS and "image quality" probably is not linear, as many "things" you can do do not have a linear "cost" if you ramp it up.

The most obvious example of these is screen resolution. Going from 1000x1000 pixels to 2000x2000 is 4x difference in "cost".

And of in PC you have to deal with driver overhead.

Overall though, if the processing power is there then sooner or later it will be used and used well not only on gimmicks. Take, for example, Eyefinity. The increased performance of modern GFX cards lets you get away playing at resolutions not available for "general consumer" just few gfx card generations earlier. It might not be "prettier" if you do a pixel per pixel comparison, but overall the immersion and resulting gaming experience is better.

wow, this is like god damn obvious... like seriously how stupid can some people be to not realise this...

A 100hp car might only have enough juice to reach 100mph, where a 1000hp car might only have enough juice to reach 250mph - but theres so many variables in between. The article must be aimed at console players.

common sense... isnt so common anymore.
