Need to build a new computer for Skyrim - Page 2

Couple things I'd change.. Look into a 2500K instead of the 1100T. You can find the 2500K's for around 180-190 now days.

I'd skip the WD Green. Or at least add a 500GB - 1TB HDD WD Black for your game installs. You will not be able to install many games to the 90GB SSD and the load times will not be that great on the Green Hard Drive.

I'd also skip the crossfire and get a 580 or 6970, a lot less problems with single cards.

I wouldn't suggest the PIIx6 for a system with 6950's in CF. I would go with the 2500K and a cheaper MB.
I'm sure someone can confirm but you should be able to get a CF ready 1155 MB and a 2500K for around the same price as the Crossfire V and PIIx6

So after taking your advice into consideration, I have changed a few things. Anything that has been changed has a * in front of it. Here is my new list:

Corsair Vengeance CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9B 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 $159
*Intel Core i5 2500K $229
*HIS Radeon HD6990 4GB $799
Corsair Force Series 3 90GB SSD $189
*Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB WD2002FAEX $179
LG BH10LS30 10x Blu-ray Disc Writer $99
Corsair Hydro Series H100 CPU Cooler $169
CoolerMaster HAF X Case $209
CoolerMaster Silent Pro Gold 1000W $229

Anything that I should change?

Looks like a very nice build.

I can't comment on the 6990 as I've never owned one but I'm pretty sure you'll have the same issues as a crossfire setup. In that case it would be better to go with the dual 6950's as I have heard the 6990's really don't have that great of drivers. But like I said I'm sure someone else can chime in that has real world experience with it.

From what I've seen SLI works better than Crossfire. My main gripe with dual cards is micro stutter. Supposedly it's much more apparent with crossfire..

Personally, I'd go with 2 6950's. I think they pull ahead on performance slightly.

The rest of it is golden

Yeah after reading up on the 6990 it doesn't seem as good as at first glance. I might go with one 6970 for a start and if I need to I will add another one later if it's possible. Or maybe two 6950's but I'm not sure yet. Thanks for your help
post #18 of 47
Well,

There is nothing wrong with the 6990 if you're planning on getting 2. If you're only going to get one then yeah, i'd go with 6950's. The small performance you'll gain by getting a 6970 is up to you.

It's all down to the dollar you want to spend tbh.

You arent going to need that much RAM, you will be fine with 8GB, I know its hypocritical of me (I have 16GB) but it is true.

The PSU you listed is overkill, you can get a 750W-850W for a single card.

I would get a GTX 580 or a 570 if you can afford it
here is a GTX 580 3GB. I am not trying to be a fanboy or anything, but I hear people complaining about driver problems from ATI. Also, the card I listed is cheaper and you can SLI later if you need to

The PSU he's listed is overkill, but he's already shown proper interest in getting a seocnd 6950. Hence why I didn't bring it up.

Nothing wrong with ATI drivers, they are very good. The beat nvidia down on triple screen gaming easily.

GTX580 is a lovely card though, but it eats power. Also, that's $600, two 6950's will outperform it for the same money

As for the memory, that's true, but he might be using other applications that'll utilize it that he's not told us about.
