Which GTX 460 to add for SLI

post #1 of 23
Thread Starter
Greetings!

I´ve already got a Palit GTX460 Sonic in my PC, but it´s running quite hot on stock compared to others... Guess I just got a faulty one or something.. (friend has the same one, 29degree idle, 64 load, mine is 43 idle, 80 load).

Now I´m thinking of selling this one, and getting two other gtx460´s. Now the thing is.. Witch ones have the most room for overclocking and some proper cooling?

I've read some reviews, but i've experienced that they are often have opposite results..

Requirements : 1GB, proper cooling, overclocking capabilities.

Already saw that the Gigabyte, Cyclone, and the HAWK are quite good possibilities.. Anything else ?

Asus DCu 460 has the best VRM cooling of a 460 that is readily available, and it's core cooling is excellent as well.

This is a review of the exact same card I recommended but this one has a different colored cooler (though exactly the same in every other way) and is clocked at 775Mhz on the core as opposed to 675Mhz. The stock speeds is of little to no significance though and I would recommend against basing your decision on the stock clocks of any 460 you are considering, my 675Mhz Asus (the exact one I recommended to you) can clock well over 900Mhz, and many others can do the same. The 460s are excellent overclockers and IMO the majority can hit 850Mhz or higher given adequate core and VRM cooling which the Asus has in spades.

Check out the ones in my sigrig, they're overclocked, and I'm sure they can go higher if I unlocked the voltage.

@stu.
Ofcourse, besides, I don't have the Sonic Platinum edition witch had a issue with it. OC-ed on 850 mhz .987v, 85 degrees, fan speed 90%, fan noise : aircraft landing on top of my house....

@Juano Cheers! That's quite a nice thing allright.. I know about the fact that almost any card can clock quite good on the 460 series. Saw in a review that an Gigabyte version clocked to 1000mhz core on stock voltage...sick stuff! Can't even dream about that with this Palit one... I mostly aimed at a card with proper cooling supplied..

Ofcourse, it could be a option to add a aftermarket cooler to the reference GTX460's.. For the non-reference GTX460 they almost all take 2 slots or MORE.. Can't SLI with that stuff..

I agree with Juano. I have that GPU, and at load it barely reaches 60C and at idle it is about 31C at most, usually it's at 29C. It's a great graphics card.
