[TS] Kindle Fire preorders are killing it, 250,000 and counting

Most Android-based tablets have been duds compared to Apple's iPad, but Amazon could be well on the path to victory. Cult of Android has published a datasheet supposedly received from an inside source that shows Amazon's preorder sales for the upcoming slate. A mere five days after opening preorders, the company sold over 250,000 tablets.

That breaks down to more than 2,000 devices per hour and if preorders continue at that pace, the company will move some 2.5 million units when the Kindle Fire launches on November 15. By comparison, Motorola only shipped 100,000 Xooms in its first month and a half on the market and Research In Motion took a month to sell 250,000 PlayBooks.

That's a lot of Fire.

Dang. I too am considering getting one.

Not sure if I want a normal ebook, or a tablet. Hmm.....

And if you're patient, the word is that they're just pushing this first gen out for the holidays. Early 2012 is when a revised Kindle Fire is supposedly coming, and it's the one Amazon wanted to introduce in the first place.

I am pulling this from my memory from an article on Android Central a week or so ago though, so don't hold me 100% accountable.

Newer tech is always just around the corner. If you can wait a few months for something incrementally better then maybe your need is not that great in the first place.

Not going to preorder but will buy whenever Wal-Mart or Best Buy has them in stock.

It's the Kindle branding and price that are selling this thing. IMO only the second one is justified, since the Fire has given up much of the Kindle's strengths in ditching the E Ink display. Instead we pretty much just got a Android 2.3 tablet with limited functionality (until it gets rooted). On the bright side, prices are down on the other Kindles, so everyone wins.

Its basically like a htc evo phone in terms of power. So that should tell you what this tablet is capable of, just in a bigger form factor.

Content as well. Not that it's justified. As far as I know Prime streaming still works on Android devices. A lot of Kindle users use alternative means to get Ebooks, but yeah. They also have their own appstore until the device gets rooted. Branding and price point are selling this thing yeah. E Ink vs LCD is just something for technophiles to argue over.

I can see Amazon selling a lot of these for that price. What defies every law of the universe though is how Apple sells their piece of junk Ipad for $400 or $500 and people actually buy it. Makes my head spin.
