What is the best GPU that runs off mobo power alone?

Thread Starter
My friend is thinking about getting a 4670. He can't upgrade his 250 watt psu. Is there a faster/better card than that which runs off the PSU power and wont cripple his computer?

What is the best card you can get which runs off the motherboard power and is compatible with a 250 watt PSU?

Thanks a lot!

I'd suggest Nv GT 240. Generally same speed, but newer tech.

I want to say the fastest is an HD 5670 followed by the GT240.

True, I'll second that. 240 comes 3D-ready, but 5670 has Dx11 support, which makes it better. +20% more raw performance.

Without using any external power, the fastest should be the Colamax/Afox HD6850 Green. It is hard to find if you are not in Asia though.

Colamax link: http://www.colamax.com/product.aspx?pid=108
Review link: http://www.coolaler.com/showthread.php?t=261215

The 2nd fastest and more readily available is HD6670.

He can't upgrade his PSU or he won't? A quality ~500w is around $50 and will run most single card systems with ease. I realize it's more than he can or is willing to spend but I would definitely advise him to think about it a little more. A little extra money now could potentially save him some in the long run.

What does he use this computer for and what are his expectations/desires for the new card? Is it a purchase of necessity (ie his old card fried and he just needs something to get the comp up and running again) or is he looking at this as an upgrade?

i have a nvidia geforce 9800gt that i use for physx... it is a 1gb ddr3 card, and can run on systems with as little as 350w psu

it played starcraft 2 on high settings and got good fps! on ultra it would average around 20fps

edit: woops... just saw that it's 250w psu limit... oh well

according to Tom's its the 6670.

Edit: the differences between the 5670 and the 6670 don't really look like they're worth the price? Both should work for his purposes. I'd go for a 5670 with a good cooler if it was my money.

I didn't realize the 6670 didn't need a connector, its a little better with 480sp over 400sp on the 5670.
