I agree. This is what I'd suggest. It gives you the best performance and redundancy. But does make it so you'd have to buy a 4th drive, thus costing a little more.

You cannot do a RAID 0 combined with a RAID 1 with only 3 hard drives.

Do 4 drives in a raid 10, it gives you redundancy for 1 drive failure, and it will also give you the fastest raid performance you can reach on those platters.

now if i switched to raid 10 would i have to do anything to my current drives or can i just pop the new ones in and switch from raid 0 to 10? i only have experience with raid 0 so i assume its basically the same process of setting it up?

I am not sure. You may have to reformat. It is the same process of setting up any other array though.

You would probably have to re initialize the array.

humm so most likely i'd have to lose everything to be able to keep everything haha. maybe it'd be easier to just get and external and back up every now and then instead of possibly losing the stuff i have now.

^you are correct! btw..raid 10 HALFS the storage space i.e. 4 500gb drives =1 tb raid 10..and 3 hdds in RAID 0 gives best performance

RAID is nice for redundency.... ability to continue working in case of hardware failure.

I would do RAID0 with periodic backup to another drive.
Once again...
