Cheap 6 monitor setup?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,
Let me start off by saying I'm probably not actually going to buy anything here. I'm just curious.

Currently I'm running a 9600 GSO and 7300 GT in SLI (funny right?) with 4 monitors and it works alright, but I'm building a new computer and I have a 5th monitor just sitting on the floor, so I'm curious to see what I can do to get up to 6 screens for not a lot of money wink.gif

My new mobo is the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3. I'm either going with a bulldozer 6 or 8 core depending on the performance results when they launch, or the 1090T if it turns out that bulldozer sucks tongue.gif

I really don't game much as I'm sure you could already tell by my current setup, but I do occasionally like to throw on some basic games. Nothing heavy like Crysis or anything, more the older RTS games like Age of Mythology and that stuff. The most intense game I've played recently is probably League of Legends (and that was months ago) tongue.gif

The majority of what I use my computer for is internet (hello OCN biggrin.gif), audio recording, photoshop/illustrator, watching standard def videos, and (rarely) watching 720p videos (1080 rarely plays without too much stutter. Surprised?)

So how about it OCN? What's the cheapest you can do while not having horrible performance? biggrin.gif
(by the way, dual DVI is preferred on cards but not required)

edit: I probably should have specified that I was looking for a graphics card setup that allows for a maximum of 6 monitors. I have no plans for buying a 6th screen right now but I'd like to at least use the 5 I have

I don't know that there is a such a thing as a cheap 6 monitor setup, but if you already have 5 monitors getting one more is not all that expensive. though if the monitors are all different sizes that might make it more complex. There are special frames designed to hold 4 to 6 monitors. That being said i am unsure how you would want to mount them. Is there some task in particular you wanted to use this for? like gaming or something. because that would dictate how you would go about doing a 6 monitor setup

If you decide to use a hexa-monitor stand for six identical monitors, the stand alone will run you at least $110:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Super-Hex-Monitor-Stand-Monitors/dp/B0036Q30HK"]Amazon.com: Super Hex Monitor Stand holds up to 6 26" Monitors: Office Products[/ame]

Now, again, depending if you went with identical monitors (a la 24" LCDs), you could add another $650+ for some cheap Acers (for example).

However, if you are mechanically inclined, you could always build your own monitor stand. There is a build log somewhere with OCN (the username escapes me atm), but anyways you could probably build something for cheap. Just depends on what you are looking for.

EDIT: the build log I was looking for (curiosity of seven9st surfer)

Thanks for the responses guys! It somehow didn't occur to me that people would assume I wanted to physically set up 6 screens on a stand. I updated the op with what I meant. I'm just looking for a graphics card setup that will allow for 6 monitors to be used at once

To the OP it's impossible to SLI a 9600 and 7300. SLI requires the card's to be the same serie's. Just having 2 video card's does not equal SLI.

If you don't game then get a 5770 Eyefinity 6 edition. Its like $120 bucks.

I'm sure I could get 2 separate cards that support 6 monitors total for less than a 5870 haha. But trust me, I'd LOVE to have that card.

Well an SLI jumper on the mobo had to be switched to on, an SLI bridge had to be used to connect the cards, and SLI had to be enabled in the BIOS. I guess I kind of assumed that meant SLI :S

Did you mean the Eyefinity 5? If so, I'm assuming that this is it. That would be pretty good, but then I'd have to buy all of those extra display port adapters which can add up. Also, I see that it's PCIe 2.1. On a 2.0 board, would that just reduce performance or would it not work at all? Also, (stupid question time) can I use an ATI/AMD card with an Nvidia card? For example, keep using my 9600 and get some ATI 5xxx that supports 3 screens to have a total of 5? I assume the answer is no, but it's always good to check.

YES, you can. Some of us are using AMD cards as main rendering card and add another nVidia as Dedicated PhysX or just use the additional ports for extended monitors. This hybrid will only be supported by Windows XP and Windows 7.
