I need to put my ASA back into business though for CCNP exams.

Application-wise, Windows Firewall is sufficient behind NAT and/or hardware firewall

I really hope you are kidding.

Even if you don't care about your own welfare, you are helping to endanger other people by allowing your machine to be infected.

I used to use a HIPS firewall. As a paranoid type I liked the control over everything. But they just suck the life out of your resources. And unless you know how to answer every popup and give the right access it's pointless anyway. There are two types of firewalls around now so it's not like you can just pick one without a little bit of research. There are 1) Basic packet filtering firewalls 2) application control (HIPS) plus packet filtering. Me personally I want a lightweight running computer. So I've started using Zonealarm free version on a few computers. And Look n Stop, another basic packet filter that needs little resources. Just decent protection with little fuss. I only want to be alerted when something is connecting out.

TBH, 3rd party software firewall running on my pc is the one thing I put the most emphasis on. I would run Windows 7 firewall, it is alright for packet filtering and inbound protection, it has default deny inbound rules for all applications. It won't though alert you should you get infected and the malware attempts connect out, or to download crap, etc. Same with any applications that are phoning home without your knowledge - Win 7's firewall would be better served with alerts. The application rules are created automatically, you can set a default denial for everything, and manually create permission rules ... which means paying attention to eveything you've downloaded that will need connecting out - unlikely. This is not for the average user. XP's inbuilt firewall is junk, btw.

----

You can turn Win 7 firewall into a fully functioning firewall with alerts. There are a few lightweight applications for it that act as alerters.

● Windows Firewall Control - Bit buggy, and used more resources than I liked ... but will be good when it's smoothed out. I tried it on my win 7 64bit http://www.binisoft.org/wfc.php Free version is functional. $10 for pro.

● Windows Firewall Notifier - Haven't tried it. http://wokhan.online.fr/progs.php?sec=WFN free

● Windows 7 Firewall Control - Stable and works well, light on resources. Has a free version. Payed version isn't worth the money, IMO. http://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/order.html
