Help with OC my i7 950 to 4.2ghz

Thread Starter
My current oc is 4.0 see cpu-z validation. The v-core is pretty high for 4ghz so I want to oc it further. If i set the multiplier to 23x making it 4.3ghz, my system will not boot. It gets stuck in the windows corporation sceen. Now if I try to increase the BLCK by 5, it freezes within 5-10 mins of running Prime95. I don't get it. I can get 4.2 with my vcore. What should I do?

Also, DRAM is 1.60v and everything else is on auto. I get 80c w/ 4.0ghz running prime95 and idles at 40c.

if it isnt booting than you obviously can not get 4.2 on your vcore. 80 degrees celsius is pretty hot and i wouldnt reccomend trying any hotter unless you upgrade cooling. yes your vcore can go higher but not with safe temps

Hi,

You should be able to get to 4.2 with that kit.

The one main item thats going to hold you back is the the amount of
ram you have and the voltage needed to keep it stable.

Plus the heat factor with the voltage increase.
I was able to get to 4.2 with my old H50 push pull and some pretty high
fan speeds because of the high fpi on the rad.
But 3x2 6gigs

You have a little more rad but like said ram limiting factor.

Don't be afraid to raise CPU and QPI voltage as long as cooling is addressed.
Disable all your power saving features and go manual.
Manually set your exact ram specs.
Can change timing ect. once you have your clock stable.
Few tips
Read the stickies also as to setup.

I need 1.41v load vcore, and 1.34v VTT / 1.35v QPI for 4.24

Things you should try is changing the multi and BCLK

Set your ram to run under its default, keep it around 1200 - 1400 for now

Also with 6 x 4GB sticks your going to need to bump the QPI a bit I would imagine, probably up around 1.45v area

You could try using just 3 sticks to get an idea if the added ram is an issue...

Check the link in my sig for the i7-950 Club thread, alot of users there running similar setups to yours...

You guys got some nasty i7's there....i do 4ghz at 1.2v. Id say fine tune 4 ghz to see what your minimum volts is there. Then move up from there....go up by 5 each time.

Id say they are pretty average....I need 1.36 to get 4Ghz HT off with mine....you just have a really good chip

I agree, if someone can hit 4.0+ below 1.30v then I'd say they have a good cpu.. On average the i7-900 series needs around 1.35 for 4.0, and 1.40 to go beyond it...

occasionally you will see cpu's running high clocks at low volts, but its hardly the rule

Hi,

Here ya go .

Run this voltage and clock in the AZ summertime, Hate AC mode

Run 4.51 when cooler ambients but takes a little over 1.42 volts
to do it.
And when playing Metro and couple other games.

Running 600.5 worth of water to do it though.
Chased the batch # before I got it.
And HT on.
