[Geforce] How To Unlock Rage's High Resolution Textures

With that in mind, some gamers noted on forums that the visible textures on their high-end graphics cards were obviously not 8k, perhaps because of an Auto-Balancer error, and so people began experimenting with configuration files and console tweaks in the hope of forcing the textures to the level mentioned by Carmack.

On NVIDIA-powered PCs there’s an additional menu item that enables GPU Transcoding, a feature that makes use of the GPU’s CUDA Cores to dynamically alter said detail levels as fast as possible so the balancing isn’t visible when you turn round quickly, for example. You see, to ensure that the Auto-Balancer can use high resolution textures in front of the player, regardless of the size of their video card’s memory, it reduces the quality of assets behind the player to as low a level as possible. Without GPU Transcoding enabled the CPU cannot reload the high quality assets fast enough, leading to unsightly scenes where the added detail pops into existence in plain view.

This just popped up on Facebook a couple minutes ago. I did a search, but hopefully this hasn't shown up on OCN already. They also explain why people are experiencing the terribad texture pop-in.

Actually, it should work everywhere. The problem, from what I can tell, is that the auto-balancer was being too conservative. If you use the config file, it'll override the auto-balancer and force the texture resolution and Anisotropic Filtering.

Assuming the fix is perfect, I hope this spreads across OCN quick. There was some hardcore raging regarding the textures.

When I first saw the video that has spread around, I was like is that a BETA or something.

My jaw dropped when someone told me the game launch was yesterday.

So I'm confused. I cant use 4k textures on my GTX 470 because I dont have 1.5 GB of VRAM?

I haven't actually observed the game at all, though I'm probably in the same boat as you.

It's the same as any other memory situation. You're free to try the 8k textures on 1080p; but if it ends up requiring more memory than your GPU has available, it'll start using your system memory and your FPS will tank. If that happens, you can lower either the texture resolution in the config file or your game resolution.

I just got to that area where that screenshot was looked terrible.
