I have to disagree with that. My B55@4.0 with two GTX260 draws 515-538W just playing Crysis 2. To me that's not enough headroom.

This is a stupid debate. 800W is more than enough, but why is that a bad thing? 650W is plenty for what he needs, but I don't understand why people feel the need to bash anyone recommending more headroom than 650W provides.

I don't think anyone disagrees that quality 650W is enough for his application. But moderator or not, relax and allow other valid opinions.

I may not be a mod, but I certainly know what I'm talking about and I take offense at anyone suggesting my opinions are foolish because I don't have "MOD" tagged onto my name.

If anything, a mod is someone who has alot more free time than I do.

Gettting more than required is wasting money, the OP has not indicated that he is looking to future proof the rig, only that he want's to run SLI.

Furthermore, running crysis and drawing around 500w from the wall is fine, dont' think that's what the actual rig using. take into account the PSU efficieny, say 80% the actual power would be around 400w so that is enough headroom and pioneer is right.

It's only a stupid debate when one fails to understand that the OP is looking to SLI his cards, NOT future proof his rig in the sense where he'll be upgrading his GPU's anytime soon, that wasn't even mentioned. So to get anything more than 650w is and will be a waste of money, so recommendations given above 650w are not valid because the OP didn't ask a question that will require those responses.

You said it yourself, 650W is plenty for what he needs, then why would someone recommend something higher? plain and simple it would be a waste of money.

Nothing to do with being a MOD or having an X amount of REP, it's about the facts and the question the OP has asked, and neither one of those suggests a higher wattage reommendation is needed.

The only reason WHY recommending an overkill 750-850w PSU is silly, is because its a complete waste of money. How much is a good 850w PSU? I'll give you a hint, they start at around $120 or so and go up from there. How much is a good 600-650w PSU? Around $50-60 (and obviously goes up from there).

So why waste roughly $100 on a PSU that he'll NEVER need with his setup? A good quality 650w unit is honestly more than enough for I'd say 90% of OCN's members (as a rough guess). The only thing that honestly really requires more power is SLI high end cards (480's / 580's / 6970's), and tri / quad fire / SLI. Not very many people have those kinds of setups, so why waste the money on a PSU if it will NEVER be used?

And don't bring efficiency talk in here either, don't EVEN get me started on that. My rig at full folding load, brought my power bill up a whopping $10 a month (compared to not folding and shutting it off when not in use). Take into account the $100 difference in the power supplies mentioned, and that the 850w wouldn't really be THAT much more efficient. Say the 850w would save him an extra $2 a month. That means it would take 50 months to make up the cost in power savings. (Or 4.17 YEARS) This is just using my own super rough math and my own power usage here.

See why its kind of silly to recommend spending money where its not needed?

Are you saying that your system draws 515-538W from the wall? If so, then that means your system draws about 450W to 460W from the PSU.


The problem is that he kept posting incorrect information and insisting that he was correct even though we kept correcting him as politely as we could (at first, eat least). As he said, both Scan.co.uk and Overclockers.uk told him he needed an 850W power supply, so in his mind a 650W would be very stressed for both his system as well as YouWin's system.

It didn't matter who corrected him and it didn't matter what proof we provided: we were always wrong and he caused YouWin to worry about whether or not the TX650 "V2" would be enough more than 2 times. Both times I had to reassure him that it's more than enough.

It would have been fine if he just stepped down and let us help YouWin. Have you ever been trying to help someone when you have to simultaneously and repeatedly correct one person who keeps getting in your way? It's not a big deal if such a person would step down when they are politely corrected the first time, but when they keep posting and keep posting and keep posting and keep posting insisting that you're wrong when you know damn well that you are right, it begins to get just a bit irritating.


There's one person who strongly disagrees with us, and that is Chuggerboom. He's the guy I'm talking about here. I don't like patting myself on the back or anything like that, but I said right from the very start that a quality 550W-650W power supply is more than enough and for the most part, so did everyone else. Then he comes along and said "No way would i run what you have with a 650w psu. Check my earlier post." in (Post #26).

So then I tried to correct him as politely as I could which is when he told me that Scan.co.uk and Overclockers.uk told him that he needs an 850W for his system even though most people here knows that a quality 650W would be absolutely plenty. Then he goes "Never stress your PSU'.


It continued to get worse from there. Suffice it to say that if he had just backed off and let us help YouWin, then this thread would probably only have 30-50 replies like usual instead of 116. This was a simple thread with a simple answer.

I think the OP's question has been answered... And any new question of his might be drowned out in the bickering.
