My Zotac GTX 580 AMP! is Dead

So i bought the OC'd version of the GTX 580. I didn't know much about Zotac, but it was sub 400 so i thought it was a good deal.

The first day i used it, it worked fine. Ran AC Brotherhood and Prince of Persia without any issues.

The 2nd day i turn on the PC, the fans and lights turn on for a second, everything then shuts off and i smell burning. I took the card out and the PC runs fine without it since i have an onboard gfx card. When i took out the card and smelled it, it definitely smelled like it was burnt.

I have a 950W PSU, 8 gigs of ram, and a Asus z68 V Pro mobo.

Any idea what happened to my card? PSU issue? Card issue? Never experienced this before.

Bizarre - I'm assuming the card you were running previously didn't have any problems? Have you tried placing the old card back in the system to test?

Wow. Heppened the same to me (although in other circumnstances) with a Gigabyte board.. I feel for you... Sorry man.

Try an RMA... I mean AFAIK GPUs are not supposed to burn when gaming....

This is a brand new system. The 1st day that it worked was the day i put it together. Every single part i used was brand new.

MKII Silencer 950W PSU
i5-2500k
8gig Corsair Vengeance Ram
Asus Z68-V Pro
1TB WD Black
HAF-X Case

I returned it to Microcenter and got a new one. Just wondering what the issue could be so i can avoid it in the future.

Well it could've been a bad card, or overheated. Unless it was blocked and thus could not get sufficient airflow, it doesn't sound like it was directly your fault. Cards die all the time so pretty much never know. Just try to keep yours under 90*c (load) and you should be fine. I think the maximum temp is 93 or 97*c but personally I'm never comfortable with anything going over ~88*c

Oh, and make sure you go to the Zotac website and register your card for warranty.

The computer was off for 18 hours and then it burnt as soon as i turned it on, 2 seconds after firing the PC up.

just curious, you did plug the PCI Express pin in and not the 8pin CPU pin to the card right?

Well if he had done that it wouldn't have started in the first place would it? (the first time he used it).
