Thread Starter
This may be in the wrong forum, and i apologize if it is.

I am having an issue with my wife's computer.

It constantly puts her monitor to sleep, but the computer tower itself remains on. I am unable to wake the monitor at all by any method other than just hard-rebooting the entire system.

It will boot back up and run normally for a short period of time then shut the monitor off again.

Its very aggravating.

I had a couple guesses but i just thought i'd ask and see if it was more obvious to any of you.

My guesses are...

#1, Video card going bad or overheating
#2, Corrupt software

Can anyone provide some insight?

Thanks

Is the monitor going to sleep after idle or at random times?

You might want to try going into your Power Options and setting "Turn Off Monitor" to Never.

At random times.

At first i thought the computer was crashing, but the tower appears to be staying on. Obviously with the monitor off, i can't exactly tell whats going on.

Can you post what hardware your wifes computer is running? If its a Sandy Bridge, some of the BIOS settings can be changed to remedy this.

No, its an old OEM Dell PC unforunately.

Its a Core2Duo.

I dont have the exact specs on hand. (at work)

If you have an extra monitor, try testing it with another monitor to see if it's a problem with the monitor itself.

Have you tried using a different monitor? It could actually be the monitor flaking out.

I would first try using a different monitor to see if the same thing occurs.

Edit: krnb0iek beat me.

If it does reoccur with a different monitor then it could be the onboard graphics card is going out, driver issues, etc.

I've also got a spare video card i can try.

I guess i'll do the monitor first and then try that. If neither works i can try reformatting the HD to replace any corrupt software.

I would try monitor first, then video card, then reformatting. It can possibly be a power supply issue as well.
