Lucid Virtu -> Smooth video payback while GPU folding

Thread Starter
Short story:
If you have choppy video playback while folding on your GPU and you have a motherboard/processor capable of running Lucid Virtu, install the Lucid Virtu driver in order to offload your video playback to the integrated GPU while folding on your discrete GPU.

Long(er) story:
Just built a new rig and have recently started folding. I set up the Folding@home client according to the instructions in this thread:
http://www.overclock.net/folding-home-guides-tutorials/977412-windows-7-complete-client-v7-guide.html
and found that it did any excellent job of pinning all 8 threads of my 2600k at 100% and my GTX100 at 100% usage as well. However, when I went to watch a video while the folding client was running I found that I got choppy playback. This prompted me to install the Lucid Virtu driver to try to offload the video playback to the Intel 3000 gpu. When I first set things up I didn't bother since I had read that while GPU folding you want to use your primary display driver, but after installing Virtu I found that it didn't make any difference: The folding client still pegged everything at 100% usage but my video playback via the HD3000 was super-smooth. smile.gif I searched all over and found instances of people experiencing choppy video playback while GPU folding but no threads containing this solution. Hope this helps somebody.cheers.gif

Hmmm, nice. i always thought that the chugging was due to lack of available CPU cycles...

All the more reason I wish I had SB over the original i7 line. :\

But then again, I'm not sure how well the integrated unit would play back HD video (720p+), which is what I normally have to pause my clients for.

As far as I know the integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics can handle 1080p blu-ray playback without issue. I was streaming HD video from a TV Tuner in Windows Media Center yesterday on the integrated graphics without any problem.

In every choppy video playback thread I've seen I've always posted my findings, and based on everything I've ever seen it's always been GPU usage being the culprit.

I just said it cuz i never had issues with the GPU client. Choppy playback of 1080/720p only happens when i fire up the CPU client. tongue.gif
