My Planned New Build - Page 3

post #21 of 26
I don't know where you get the $189 price. The retail box fx 4100 will retail for about $120 in the us AMD $125 in Canada according to the most reliable retail sources. The fx 6100 will retail for $190.

The Phenom lineup proves better fps in games then the entire i lineup.
I wouldn't jump straight to this conclusion. Although the i3 line is roughly equal, the i5 and i7 lines as of the newest generation are usually found to have better performance (but for more cost).

I wont ever be CrossfireX on this rig so I only need the single x16 lane. With the card bumped from the 6870 to the 6950 there should be no game I cant run. I also bumped the memory down to a 2x2gb kit which helps me afford the 6950. I can purchase more memory later its only $28.

I think the i3 runs games better actually? And the Phenom is generally considered better for multimedia applications.

The phenom should keep you happy though, and I greatly approve of your decision to bump up to a 6950. The better GPU should make a much bigger difference in games than i3 vs 955 BE.

In my opinion it'd be foolish to buy right now. In a week we will have the FX series processors by AMD. Surely the 4core FX will out perform the phenom II and be of comparable price. To me it's just a no brainer to wait. Also I would much rather save 10 bucks here, and 10 bucks there to get an in actuality better case and PSU and use it to invest in a 6950 or 560ti instead of a 6870. Not that there's anything wrong with that card. But you can fit better goodies in your budget than what you have right now.

Pretty sure that Phenom II will bottleneck you real soon, if not already without decent overclocks.

And as others say, just wait one week for Bulldozer. UNLESS you want to buy now, I understand, but you will regret it when Bulldozer is out.

The build I suggested with the alternative i5-2400, GTX560Ti, Gigabyte MOBO, and 2x4GB kit, would be better in gaming than the latest rendition of your build and is basically the same price point.

You'd have to overclock the 955 to 4.5GHZ to match the i5-2400 at stock (locked) speeds. That's not a likely OC to reach stable, long term.

Not true, It will only bottleneck in CPU intensive games (Ex: SCII). His GPU will bottle-neck his system durring Graphically intensive games (Ex: Crysis).

@OP
I would suggest an i5-2500K though. You can get it easily with your budget.
Also, You dont have a HDD. If I were you, I would not get a SSD and just get a HDD for now, your budget is a little small and you need some space to save your games. Your SSD will only help with game load times and OS boot times. Normally I would highly suggest getting the ssd but since you are working with a tight budget, there is no reason to get it. you are spending money on a SSD when you could be getting a better gaming machine. save up for a ssd later and don't gimp your gaming capabilities.

Here is a build I came up with:

I am all for AMD, but right since you are building a system, the more logical answer would be to go with Intel. They have better Price for performance. AMD just has the budget processors.

If you insist on going AMD, wait for BD and watch the PII prices drop.
