GTX 570 or HD 6970? - Page 2

I would go for the 6970 mainly for the vram. The 6970 and 570 are pretty close in benchmarks so I don't think it's worth the extra money for the 2.5GB 570. I was going to go back to nvidia this time but wanted the extra vram so I went ati again. I plan on keeping these for awhile so I wanted the extra.

No, stick with a GTX 570 or a HD 6970. I have a GTX 580, two GTX 570's in SLI, and three HD 6970's in Tri-fire. The performance of a GTX 570 is very close to that of a GTX 580 when BOTH are overclocked to their full potential at 1150mV's Core Voltage. Of course, the better quality VRM's, the higher the Core Voltage you can overclock to (thus also your overclock potential), but the cost factor goes up as well.

VRAM over 1GB is overrated if you're not playing at resolutions above 1920 x 1200.

unless your going surround vram wont be a factor. the 1.2gb 570s scale better in SLI than the 6970s do in xfire @1080p/1200p and have less drop in frames.

You can read through my little "unofficial" review of them both if you'd like, I learned some interesting things while doing it. I stayed with the 570's in the end.

6970.

The 2gb will really start to show in newer games. Even with bf3, usage goes to 1.3+ gb of memory.

Skyrim will probably bump that figure up.

6970 and 570 trade blows, so get the 6970.

If it helps I got the 570 (1280MB), it can run the BF3 beta on ultra (although it's not true ultra and the proper game will be better, but it does impact performance over high settings, I know this because I tried putting settings to ultra on my HD5770 and i got much lower frame rate) at 1600x1200 with completely smooth fps, there is no vram issue because BF3 won't use more than you have at high settings at least if you have 1GB or more. I can't speak for other games though but some people say Metro 2033 uses loads of vram and they lost performance when they put the settings/res really high.

The thing is it seems with graphics cards GPU's and the amount of VRAM are matched e.g. the 570 has 1.3GB and the 580 has 1.5GB. In games that will try to use more than you have, usually by the time you get to that point and you're running out of vram you won't have enough GPU processing power anyways for the settings you're trying to use. Some of those AMD cards that have 2GB like the 6950, I think in some games they'll already be maxed out and struggling with frame rate before they can use up all of the VRAM they have, unless playing at some really high resolution (which also takes GPU power as well as VRAM I think).

Hi Frostbite, notice your new to OCN. It helps when asking questions you list your computer specs in BIO 'Edit systems' so we know what your dealing with. It helps us make the better choice for you.

I'm going to assume your playing with single monitor and not greater than 1920x1080p resolution.

Funny how people will say that 1GB VRAM cards aren't enough for a single monitor but then turn around and suggest that 2GB VRAM will spread across three monitor set ups.

Turns out that currently even maxing VRAM on single monitor has such minimal performance difference it dosen't matter. 1GB VRAM cards are enough for single monitors at or under 1920x1080p.

Here is a question I'll ask you about your current situation that you will think about and will help you figure out your own answer based on your possible needs. Ask yourself the following.

IFyour looking into possible multiple monitors and IF your choosing between the 6970 2GB vs the 570 1.25GB VRAM cards, then go AMD. IF your looking at the 6970 2GB vs the 570 2.5GB VRAM then go Nvidia.

IF your looking into possible 3D gaming and watching 3D blu-ray movies then hands down go Nvidia. On a single monitor there's very marginal difference between VRAM as anything under 1920x1080p isn't utilizing it like multiple monitors.

IF your not looking into either option, then flip a coin. Both run games evenly as well as each other. Some games one will do better than the other but where one wins it's minimal performance between the two and vice versa.

Hope this helps a bit. Let us know what you ended up in deciding and post back. Welcome to OCN
