universal water block question

Thread Starter
I have been looking at vga blocks for a while now and was wondering why people don't always go with a universal? Seems like you would be able to take from one card to the next without having to buy another water block? And its cheaper?

Also I know the universal only cools the gpu chip. What do I need to buy to cool the memory?

I just want to be able to go from one set up to the next without having to buy anything new but tubing or replace something for when it goes out.

Well for me ive spent so much money on the graphics card and watercooling stuff that theres no point cheaping out on it. Also I dont have to worry about sticking on little ram sinks or have to have extra fans.

I was thinking the rasa 360 that you recommended to me, then just picking up a universal wb for my gpu and add it to the loop? Beats paying an extra $100+ for every gpu you buy to have the wb for it.

VRAM sinks help from having them blow, or just make sure you have a fan blowing directly on them. I had a universal GPU on my GTX 460 1GB's, and I didn't put any heatsinks on the MSI Cyclones, but having an 80mm fan did the job. I also never needed to put any ramsinks on the memory.

My reasons for full cover waterblocks:
1. I have the money.
2. VRM cooling is better than having a heatsink/fan on them.
3. Memory cooling is better than putting on ramsinks, and sometimes you won't be able to put ramsinks on the memory if the height of the universal GPU is in the way with the tubing/barbs.
4. Looks better.
5. Some PCB's need for you to mod it. For a Palit Sonic Platinum GTX 570, I had to do just that.

If I went mid-ranged GPU's, then I'd put universal GPU blocks on them, like I did with my GTX 460 1GB's. Otherwise, for high-ranged GPU's, if you're spending that kind of money anyway, an extra $40 isn't much of an upgrade cost from a universal GPU cost.

full cover = better reliability, better performance, higher overclock, etc...
also, if the card has a full cover block and a backplate on it, the resale value is higher.

I have seen a few people use a universal block on a GPU and cut up the stock cooler to cool the VRMs, RAM, etc. and it can look really neat that way. However, most warranties require the card go back to the manufacturer in it's original state in order to to be honored, so if you cut it up, you can't return it.

XFX waranties allow the replacment of the cooling system as long as the cards is returned in it's original state. The warranty even states that you can snd in the block and card and their technicians will install the block for you. I'm sure that's not free though...

I just wanted to wc my 460 for cheap cause I will be upgrading to a 600 series when they come out and figured I could transfer the block instead of spending $200+ in waterblocks when a $50 block will work for both? Idk like I said I'm not a wc expert lol just .looking for advise. I'll put up a link to the block I am looking at getting when I get home but I'm currently at work...

I guess I should verify a bee things like I won't be doing any oc with the gpu accept taking a reference card to a sc card spec.

Will a triple rad be able to handle 2 sc gpus and a little over mildly oc cpu?
