thinking about getting one of these for my HTPC's

I sold my 4 bay Drobo last month and im kinda missing it. I've got my 2 Silverstone LC17's filled with 6 HDD's in each and I want to just consolidate the drives to one location. Im thinking of purchasing 2 of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...nic-_-17576001

Anyone have any advice on them? I dont want to build a server if I dont have to and looking ofr other cheap options as well.

Well two of those only nets you 8 HDDs versus the 12 HDD you have now. Plus it's still two locations because these aren't NAS, they are Direct storage so they only connect directly to a PC.

How many HDDs do you expect to have? If you're going to keep growing, going this route is going to harder to manage. Also, do you need RAID?

These will work but I would consider a NAS or Server if you want to keep growing

I really plan on using 8 drives max. I have windows 7 on all of my machines so I would just share them over my network as I do now. I dont need Raid due to them being used for movie storage. I thought about a server but I just want to keep it simple and cheap. I'll probally max them out with 2tb drives so 16tb's of space is cool with me for now and when the 3tb drives come down on their prices 24tb's of space will be more than enough.

How much money are you willing to spend?

You could probably buy a used HP mediasmart server for around $200-250.
Not everyone will agree with me, but WHS is awesome. They typically only hold 4 drives, but you can then buy nearly limetless storage devices similar to the one you were looking at to add more space. The best part is that WHS will make an aggregate collection of everything thats attached to it. So it will seem like one big drive.

The cheaper the better for me....Im just looking for a new home for all of my digital media, and to keep it safe and cool. My LC-17 case if very cramped and I want to keep the drives as cool as possible.
