GTX 570 or HD 6970 for Tessellation?

Thread Starter
Which would be better for tessellation, the GTX 570 or HD 6970? Is it really a proven fact that the GTX 570 generally performs better with tessellation (if so, to what extend?) or just in Crysis 2? Are there any reliable benchmarks of Unigine Heaven (I believe this is a tessellation benchmark...) comparing the two cards? Also, is it true that the open beta of Battlefield 3 does not include any tessellation and that the final game will? I'm basically trying to decide between buying a GTX 570 or HD 6970. I'm slightly favoring the HD 6970 because of it's lower price. I will mostly use whichever card to play Battlefield 3 at 1920x1080 over the next many months...

6970 imo, but 570 has better tesselation.

Wait till BF3 is released to see. BF3 has no tessellation implemented right now. You might find the GTX 570 performs better.

6970 better overall. 570 comparable, and better tessellation performance.

Don't forget, you can turn tesselation off in the CCC where the Nvidia cards cannot that I know of. I don't know how to directly compare them, but I have run heaven 2.5 with AMD tess at 64x and it looks the same as the Nvidia card when the wireframe is used, and it suffers a big performance hit over "AMD optimized". I wish I could give you a better answer than that but I'm just not aware of a way to compare the two since they do it differently and theres no way to tell what level the drivers force natively.

They're very comparable, I think they'll perform very closely, each pulling ahead in certain games. I don't think anybody can tell you the for sure fact on BF3, unless they're on the inside. Anything else would be just rumors.

I see you have a 6950, why not just get another and CF it? That'd yield better performance than any one card.

They're only comparable with "AMD optimized" which if you check heaven with the wireframe is not nearly as much as Nvidia applies. But if you max out the AMD tess performance takes a huge hit. Thats pretty subjective though since I have no way to determine where they meet up for sure, just that AMD's normal setting is less than Nvidia's normal setting. Can anyone tell while playing a game? No probably not.

I had to RMA it, so I'm looking for a replacement with Battlefield 3 specifically in mind.

Why would the "wireframe" be less in Heaven on AMD hardware? That defeats the purpose of a benchmark...

The wireframe just shows the level of tesselation being applied. Take a look at it with tesselation off and then on extreme. Since you can adjust AMD's tesselation through the drivers this also has an effect. You can set the benchmark at normal and apply 64x through CCC and get more effect that way.

Nvidia Tessellation Units per card:

GTX 580 = 16 Units
GTX 570/GTX 480 = 15 Units
GTX 470 = 14 Units
GTX 465 = 11 Units
GTX 560 Ti = 8 Units
GTX 560/GTX 460 = 7 Units
GTS 450/GTX 550 Ti = 4 Units

The 6970 takes the same performance hit from tessellation as the 560 Ti, which places well below that of the 570 when it comes to tessellation performance specifically.

It's one of the reasons why my 470s are faster than a 6990 or 6970CF in Heaven, 3DMark11, and Crysis 2.
