External Video Card?

Thread Starter
My friend just gave me a IBM Thinkpad T61n Premium, which isn't a half bad laptop (its processor is 200mhz faster than my main laptops )

But, as happens commonly with these models, the video card burnt out. The motherboard is about 160 to replace, so I was thinking of getting an external display adapter.

At first I thought about the Evga UV+, I thought I saw bstock ones for 20$ a while ago, but now I can only find ones ~60 on ebay. I might just try and find a way to run it headless (need to wipe hard drive and reinstall) but until then, does anyone know of a cheap external graphics adapter of some sort?

Depends on type of adapters the laptop output, you can get one cheap from newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...to+dvi+adapter

But I am not sure Intel T7300 Core 2 Duo has an embedded graphics as in 2600K? Will the adapter helps if the internal graphics was burnt in the Thinkpad?

its a soldered on graphics card, not embedded in the chip like the new i5's, and honestly I don't know if it will run with just an external adapter. I'm not much of a laptop hardware pro.

And I'm not looking for a output adapter, but a external graphics processor.

Oh, my bad but the Evga UV+ in OP is just an adapter that doesn't have graphics processor in it http://www.evga.com/uvplus/

I think you will need EXTERNAL GRAPHICS something like the below but it is going to cost you over $160 than replacing the bad component in the Thinkpad.

hmm the UV specs says it has DDR memory, but 'No GPU, uses Virtual driver" idk if this means it puts the load on the CPU, or the existing GPU.
