Help! Disassembling a Powercolor 6970.

Thread Starter
I am attempting to remove the stock backplate and heatsink from a Powercolor 6970. However I can neither get the backplate to come completely off, nor can I get the heatsink/fan assemble off the other side.

Some pics of where I am at:

I know it's still tough to see in those pictures.

I removed the 2 screws on the slot bracket. I removed all the visible screws on the backplate. Somewhere near the power connectors it feels like something is still connected or interlocked, there is definately more play in both the backplate and heatsink towards the 'front' of the card. Any advice?

sure you didn't forget one screw, as the backplate should come right off.
while the cooler need some force to get off, because of the paste and thermal pads.

I would run Furmark for 10 minutes before attempting to remove the heatsink so you don't damage the actual GPU by accident. That way the heatsink should come off easily.

Just remember, heatsinks get VERY hot.

Oh crap, your right! There is a screw under the label on the backplate. EVIL. OK attempt #2.

If all else fails just smash the heatsink off with a hammer.

Make sure to get the screws on the display pots there are 2 of them. Once you take the all out dont try to lift it but move it left and right and it will come off. Just took both my card apart 1 hours ago to install AXP.

After you removed all the screws, you need to twist the HS against the PCB. That's because the TIM settled and hardened. The backplate is because of the adhesive thermal pad.

Look for screws covered by the labels too.
