I5 2500k @ 4.3 ghz by only changing multiplier

Hey everyone,

This is my first overclock. I reviewed the sticky on how to overclock an i5 2500k.

Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3, and I have the coolermaster 212+ hyper, and 4 case fans.

I tried enabling and disabling all of the features listed in the sticky. Unfortunately Gigabyte doesn't have all of the same names as whatever motherboard he was using, so I was only able to modify about half.

After modifying the settings, I was able to increase the clock to 4.3 ghz. 4.4 would not boot. After scanning several other sites for information and tweaking more, I was no longer able to boot at 4.3 ghz.

I figured I did something wrong so I restored the optimal settings option in the BIOS and just changed the clock to 4.3 ghz.

So I have factory BIOS settings and just changed the clock. It's running fine for right now. But I would like the get it to 4.5 ghz.

Any suggestions?

Here is a little more information from some utility software:

I just downloaded cpu-z and it says the "core voltage" is 1.056 V.

After running prime95 for about 20 minutes, my temp is 55 Celsius on the "package" of CPU temperatures, even though each core stays about 48 degrees in CPUID Hardware Monitor. Hardware Monitor also agrees with cpu-z that the vcore is 1.06 V.

I wasn't sure if that was the correct voltage since I thought voltages were usually around 1.3 V, so I checked a utility that came with my motherboard called EasyTune and it said my voltage is 1.284 V.

All of this information was gathered while running prime95.

that looks pretty normal. You can overclock with everything at default settings by just changing the multiplier and, as long as you're stable (prime95 @12-24hr, Intel Burn Test w/Maximum settings+100 or more cycles), then you're golden.

You could set your "Vcore" inside your BIOS to "manual" and set it to "offset". 1.2Vcore is default for our chips.

You're on the right track.

Thanks.

However I do wish to get the clock speed to 4.5 Ghz. I tried changing the voltage too. But my computer won't boot no matter what if I change to 4.4 Ghz or higher.

might wanna try slowly playing with your BLCK.

i have my multi at x45 but because my BLCK is at 103, i get ~4.7ghz

intresting. i have a gigabyte mobo too, i'm set to 4.3 and rock stable, low temps etc. but i am unable to boot past 4.3 NO MATTER WHAT. no mater what voltage nothing... this is starting to sound like a gigabyte flaw. I'll be changing to an asus mobo soon, will post back.
can you tell me what your cpu's batch number is?

Yes, very unusual. Except that I've read about several people you have reached 4.7-5.0 ghz with this board, so I remain optimistic that I can get it up to 4.5 Ghz.

Highly doubt it's a Gigabyte flaw. There's something in the bios you haven't done or aren't doing right. What are your voltages set at?? Power options? C states?

Ive got same CPU n mobo , but since I've been busy with school, I didn't have much time to play with the bios. But i did try the easy tune utility that came with gigabyte mobo that easily let's you tune to 4.3 with just 1 click. And it's rock solid and plenty fast for any use I have for it. Will manually overclock later today after I get my water-cooling setup. Will get back to you with settings I used.

As far as mobo not booting, like someone else said above, most probably a different batch chip than others.

At 4.5GHz a nice Vcore to start at is 1.28v. Run Prime95 custom on 1344 and 1792 FFT's with 90% of your RAM used for 15-30 minutes each. Then try Intel Burn Test on Maximum. If your PC still has not crashed, test with Prime95 blend for 12 hours.

If your PC does crash, increase the Vcore in small increments.
