Starter SLR.

Thread Starter
Ok guys the wife wants an SLR. Was looking around trying to find a good one. How would a Nikon D3100 hold up for a starter? Think we would be ok with just the basic lenses? What size SD would be good 16gb or 32gb?

I know nothing about SLR's and digital cameras.....yet.

That would be fine, maybe look into a prime lens too.

As for sd card...I have a 8gb and 2gb cards lol, I recommend you get 2 16gb cards instead of 1 32gb cards just in case one randomly goes bad you have the back up...I wish i did that a few months ago, I lost a ton of pictures from a day at the race track.

Warning! Once you start getting into it you won't be able to stop taking photos! lol

I just purchased a Canon Rebel T3 (1100D I believe) as my first DSLR and so far I like it a lot. Very easy to use and I haven't touched auto yet. Last night was the first time i got to play with it and i was having a blast.

A D3100 is an excellent starter/intermediate DLSR. I wish i'd started with one if i'm honest.

I've never filled 16GB shooting before.

Not necessary.

I have a class 2 and a class 4. Even the class 2 was fast enough on my D5000, not quite on my D7000 though.

D3100 is great for entry into DSLRs. You do not need a 16GB card however. I have a 4GB card for my D300 (12MP) and average 750 shots at Large, Fine JPEG. The class of the card isn't going to be super important unless you plan to do a lot of continuous shooting (multiple frames per second) or a large amount of video. I would say a class 4 or anything from SanDisk's Extreme lineup will be fine.

any modern DSLR are great beginner cameras.

canon t2i
sony a35
nikon d3100
pentax k-r

are all very capable. take a look at the "canon loyalty program" for a t2i, that is by far the best bang for the buck dslr camera you can find.

the extra speed (class 10) or the 16gb+ isnt needed in a beginner DSLR since you will probably run out of battery/buffer before you run out of room (assuming you shoot pictures not movies).
