Fraps killing framerates, can't find out why.

Ok, so I'm trying to record Crysis 2 with Fraps, which I recently purchased ($37 -.-) And my fps drops to about 16-20. normaly its 45-50. The video is being saved to my HDD (in sig). The weird thing is, for the first two hours or so that I used Fraps, it didn't hurt my fps at all. I recorded stuff perfectly fine for awhile and then all of a sudden it just tanks my performance whenever I start to record.

I haven't been able to find any real answers, just people saying "oh yeah fraps kills fps". And I have a really hard time believing that this little program is really that demanding. I have tried the first release driver, the current one, and the latest beta. (266.66, 280.26, and 285.38)

This.

Also, what's your fps recording on? It may sound unintuitive, but raising it to like 60 is sometimes better than recording at 30.

I bet it's some thing else. Fraps runs in the background much like any process of a program but it uses an overlay so it can't really kill frames per sec unless I am missing some thing.

Do you play crysis on the same HDD were your video is being saved? By playing and recording at the same time on the same HDD, will cause the HDD to get into a heap of troubles(HDD will have to read and write at the same time)

For instance, when I'm using fraps. I have fraps installed on my SSD, it will record gameplay from my second harddrive(F3). Then proceed to save the uncompressed data to my third harddrive(WDC green)

Hi there, a few things to try !

Firstly, older versions of FRAPS were buggy for causing the problem you describe , i use 3.2.9 without any issue.

Try unistaling FRAPS throughly then reinstalling, then restart.

If you have a 2nd Hard Drive record fraps to that drive rather than the your primary OS/games drive. Using a 2nd partition on same drive wont help !!

In FRAPS on the MOVIES tab under Video capture set fps to 50 or higher ,dont lock framerate !!

Try with the "dont sync audio and video " on and off , as this can cause issues.

Try at half size.

Retry with these settings and let me know how it goes ! Good Luck !

Some games fraps will make you have massive FPS drops, Some won't.

Any game my FPS drops tons when i record with fraps, But not on Battlefield, I can still maintain 30-40fps high settings with fraps on.

No, Crysis is installed to my SSD, and Fraps saves video to my HDD

try locking your fps to 30. or custom 35 fps. that will give you constant 30 or 35 fps.

The overlay can be disabled.

FRAPS encodes in real time (it's not raw video) and writes dozens, if not hundreds, of megs per second to the the hard drive.
