Fried my GTX470?

Thread Starter
This is a real bonehead move, and I guess it's what I get for leaving my side panel off.

I was getting ready to fire up BF3 beta the other day, and was sitting Indian style in my chair, went to extend my legs out, to sit with better posture for gaming, must have been sitting on some change, and kicked a penny at my PC.

Wouldn't you know of all the places for it to land, it landed on my GTX470, that was bad. PC shutdown, upon reboot (after removing the change) now that card gets detected as Standard VGA Graphics Adapter by Win7 x64.

I tried flashing a different BIOS to the card, putting it in another PC, and cleaning/re-installing nVidia drivers. Is there anything else I can try, or did I really fry my GTX470 with 1 cent?

Ouch dude . Sounds like the copper in the penny shorted out the card. Could you RMA?

I Would RMA it and tell them I started up the computer and my card isnt working correctly.

I mean they might be able to find the short or where it burned out from where the penny hit it.

Sounds like the copper allowed something to short out and probably kill part of the card. Best try to RMA it if you can

Dang. That's pretty much what I figured. I bought the card used, and it's a card the seller got back from MSI RMA, so it doesn't have a real SN. I had thought MSI warranties were through SN, so I tried registering it on their website, no go. It's got the Twin Frozr II, and I replaced one of the fans that had broken with an aftermarket one, so I've also modded the cooler, also hindering ability to RMA.

I tried sending the seller a PM, but he hasn't logged into this website since last Feb, so I'm not sure if he'll be able/willing to help with RMA, or not.

Stupid penny killed my $200 (what I paid when purchased) GPU, also killed my excellent FPS in bf3, with one gtx 470 I can't run ultra and get a consistent 60 FPS.

Haha, forgot to mention it also killed the PCI-e slot it was plugged into. I guess I'll just save a bunch more pennies, and get a fast single card solution, and put my gtx470 into my TV pc, (I don't consider it a HTPC, because I am missing the HT, only have tv ).
