This thread is now a bit obsolete with the creation of the [Unofficial] Indie Games Information & Discussion Thread so please post there instead of here
Thank you!

Just went through the new demo of Orcs Must Die, and i have to say that i just cant get enough of Indie games and the smaller stuff that gets put out onto the market these days.

The game play is smooth, they are unique, tons of new ideas and blending of genres, just downright fun and so many times plain hilarious.

Orcs Must Die is an awesome example of this.
Tower Defense + a bit of RPG + 3rd person shooter + mass killing of orcs = a seriously great time!
the story is simple, old wizard dies, you start up, boom story in 5 seconds. yeah it isnt much but at least it's something and every bit is amusing.
after you finish a level the main character does a little victory dance for himself surrounded by the mass of bodies.
There is great variety with the traps, so many different ways to kill. then you have a crossbow that can stun, and a staff which you can use to throw orcs into the air. Everything has smooth animation, great sound, enemies have variety, great stuff all around.

and steam is doing wonders for these developers by giving us a one stop shop for everything.
Even better is so many of these games have demos! at least 75-85%. something that doesnt happy near enough (though i do understand why they arent made). also why pirate when you can check it out in a demo?!

now that i am starting to collect indie games i feel like i have stumbled into the best arcade ever invented. no pounding quarters for a fun time, just one time buy -sometimes in a combo pack that saves me even more money- and i am set until the world or the internet dies (take your pick on what's first.

i just cant get enough!! even better is that soon we will have the holiday sales! most take advantage of the bigger titles coming down in price and i know i will be, but i will be hunting out every indie game i can find.

current great games -totally subjective to me-

Orcs Must Die - just a demo but it is a sweet game with challenge and spunk 10/10

Terraria - sweet little dungeon crawler, i havent played it but many many have

Bastion - waiting for the holiday sales, loved the demo, dynamic story telling. when i played the demo i got to one area and decided to see how many things i could smash with the hammer, and the narrator waited a second then spoke of how 'our young hero vents his frustration of the collapse upon his surroundings" i had to stop and enjoy how much was really put into this game.

Defense grid - Solid TD, interesting story, a good refresh on how cool this type of gameplay is!
Revenge of the Titans - very challenging, tough to master, amazing soundtrack i had to download, and very funny, very new take on tower defense

Anomaly - havent got far into it, but it's a Top-down Tower Defense with you and the mob switching places, now you have to get to the objective and destroy the towers. it's a bit slow, but very interesting and you cant blame them for borrowing from crysis

Sanctum - futuristic (arent they all? haha) TD Shooter combo. very odd, but i have had fun trying to get good at this game. cool block style building and great leveling of towers and weapons.

Limbo - gosh what a weird game AND an amazing idea. fun gameplay, very creepy.

Edge - fun block puzzle game with 8 bit music, if i cant get the level i just let the music play!

Dwarfs - fun gold digging game, they took the gimic pretty far though, still an interesting play

need i say anything about 2 greats AudioSurf and Beat Hazard?!?! no!! they FREAKING ROCK

MAGICKA......HELLLOOOOOOOOOOO SUPER MEAT BOY......SAME THING

World of Goo - love the music! challenging, fun puzzle game, oddly cute blobs of goo.

i know i dont have all the great ones here, but i just couldnt help myself after playing the OMD demo.

dont miss out on all these greats....never paid over 15 bucks for one, and every time i have gotten them on sale for an even better price.

dont loose sight of these with BF3, Deus Ex: HR, RAGE, Skyrim, Diable 3, SWTOR... come out, these games can fill many many hours of quality gameplay.

happy gaming!!!!

Couldn't agree more. Magicka was absolutely awesome, especially the coop side.

I also feel my money is better spent on these kinda games - supporting originality and hard-working small teams, when compared with throwing money at EA and the other companies that give us this monotonous gloop.

If you liked Super Meat Boy you will love The Binding of Isaac, a side project of one of its developers.

@ fluxlite

Coop is the best way to play Magicka, all the accidents you can having killing teammates is hilarious to

Exactly! 10 bucks (or less) and you have hours of gameplay that sacrifices nothing except graphics that bring a GTX590 to its knees. glad i dont have a monster card because it wouldnt do these games justice. playing for quality and fun. i love to know that i am supporting a small group of guys instead of a corporation bent on market domination.

@ TFL Replica

i have looked at Isaac and i am a bit hesitant on it, for one because of it's religious undertone, doesnt hit me right. looks a bit creepy to, but i can see the fun it is in all the gameplay videos. Can see a ton of influence from SMB and of course love that!

Totally agree, steam is doing a great job helping small developers in the games industry.

ill have to find the article but there is another site that is in beta right now made just to sell indie games from developers, no scam, no fuss, no drm, and 100% of the cash goes right back to the makers. hope it succeeds!

The binding of isaac doesn't really feel religious to me. It's very loosely based on an old story that exists in the big 3 religions but I can't see anyone getting offended by it. Its main feature (and you won't get this in many games) is the randomly generated dungeons which are never the same and the huge variation in items, bosses and events.

loosely based may work then. the random dungeons are a sweet plus to. have you played the game? what do you think of it?
